# coverage-tracker

A Google Alerts-style tracker: pulls recent articles for your keywords, filters out junk, and pings you only on new real coverage.

## What it does

The skill runs a coverage tracker over configured keywords. It calls `news-search` with a dated query like `"keyword" after:YYYY-MM-DD` and keeps the article fields (`title`, `url`, `outlet`, `author`, `published_at`, snippet). You then dedupe the hits and judge each one.

There are six verdicts: `real_feature`, `substantive_mention`, `passing_mention`, `wrong_entity`, `junk`, `uncertain`. Only the first raises an alert. Decisions go into SQLite via `newsjack coverage record`, so the next `coverage check` skips URLs you already saw. Entity matching leans on the keyword's `means` field, which keeps ambiguous words like `profound` from firing false alerts.

Two runtime modes. Full Mode needs shell, filesystem and CLI access: check `newsjack --version` first, and if it is not on `PATH`, try `~/.newsjack/bin/newsjack --version`. The binary ships prebuilt, so no Go toolchain or build step is involved. Without a shell you get Limited Mode — a one-off check over pasted links, with no tracker config and no repeat suppression. This is not `newsjack-detector`: it does not score newsjacking opportunities or generate angles.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elvisun/newsjack --skill coverage-tracker -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/coverage-tracker/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/coverage-tracker/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elvisun/newsjack --skill coverage-tracker -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/coverage-tracker/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elvisun/newsjack --skill coverage-tracker -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/coverage-tracker/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install elvisun/newsjack coverage-tracker
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/coverage-tracker/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elvisun/newsjack --skill coverage-tracker -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/elvisun/newsjack --path skills/coverage-tracker
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/coverage-tracker/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elvisun/newsjack --skill coverage-tracker -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/elvisun/newsjack/tree/HEAD/skills/coverage-tracker/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- catch new press mentions without searching by hand
- filter SEO spam and job posts out of the results
- stop getting the same alert twice
- tell a mention of your company from an unrelated same-word hit
- check coverage across several keywords and aliases

## Example prompts
- Run the coverage-tracker for the keyword profound
- Check new mentions for tracker <slug> and show only real_feature
- Run coverage check on the fresh articles and record the decisions

# Coverage Tracker

Track whether configured keywords appeared in real coverage. Keep this simple: `news-search` collects dated article evidence, you dedupe and judge with the keyword's meaning snippet, and the CLI only stores config plus seen/alert state.

This is not `newsjack-detector`. Do not score newsjacking opportunities, generate angles, assess standing, or use monitor profiles.

## Runtime Mode

- **Full Mode:** Use this in Claude Code, Codex, OpenClaw, Hermes, or another capable agent harness with shell, filesystem, network, and local CLI access. Full Mode can read tracker config, check SQLite seen-state, record decisions, and suppress repeat alerts.
- **Limited Mode:** Use this in Claude.ai chat, ChatGPT chat, Claude Cowork, or any restricted runtime without shell/filesystem/CLI access. Do not attempt `curl`, `npm`, or on-demand CLI installation. Run a one-off manual coverage check from pasted/searchable evidence and disclose that no tracker config, SQLite state, or repeat suppression was used.

**Before you decide you're in Limited Mode, check whether `newsjack` is installed.** It ships as a prebuilt, bundled binary — you do **not** need Go, a compiler, or any build/install step to run it. Never look for a Go toolchain, and never declare the CLI "missing" or tell the user they need a "Go environment" without running this check first:

1. Run `newsjack --version`. If it prints a version, you're in Full Mode — use plain `newsjack ...` for every command.
2. If `newsjack` isn't on `PATH`, try the bundled location `~/.newsjack/bin/newsjack --version`. If that prints a version, use that full path in place of `newsjack` everywhere below.
3. Only if **both** fail (and you genuinely have no shell) are you in Limited Mode.

The bundled binary is almost always already installed — assume Full Mode and verify, don't assume it's missing.

## Workflow

In Limited Mode, skip the CLI state steps and:

1. Ask for the keyword, what it means, lookback window, and any exclusions if they are not already present.
