# cot-contrarian-detector

Runs a screen over CFTC futures markets to show where large speculators have piled onto one side. Useful when you want a starting point for a contrarian look.

## What it does

This skill covers the first stage of Jason Shapiro's contrarian method: noticing that the crowd is already committed. It pulls weekly COT data on non-commercial positioning and builds a COT Index per market over 156 weeks and over 26 weeks. Each market then gets a label: 90 and above is `CROWDED_LONG`, 10 and below is `CROWDED_SHORT`, the rest is `NEUTRAL`.

Three ways to run it. `--core` covers 23 liquid markets, `--symbols` takes your own comma-separated list, and no flag at all walks the full COT coverage FMP offers. Output lands in `reports/` as JSON (run parameters plus a ranked market list) and as Markdown with the crowded sides, week-over-week shifts and a section for markets that were skipped. Nothing gets dropped quietly: a market with too little history shows up in `skipped` with the reason attached.

You need an FMP key in `FMP_API_KEY` or via `--api-key`, and COT endpoints only open on the Premium+ plan. Python 3.9 and `requests` are the other floor. Crowding alone is not a trade signal, and the skill is plain about it — stages two through five, news failure and weekly-chart confirmation before entry and exit, are walked through by hand from `references/shapiro-methodology.md`. Enter without both confirmations and you're just guessing against a crowd that may keep winning.

- File: `~/.claude/skills/cot-contrarian-detector/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/cot-contrarian-detector/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tradermonty/claude-trading-skills --skill cot-contrarian-detector -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**

npx skills add tradermonty/claude-trading-skills --skill cot-contrarian-detector -a cursor
```
2. **Manually: put the files in place**
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/tradermonty/claude-trading-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/cot-contrarian-detector/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- surface markets where speculators are stacked on one side
- compute a 3-year and 26-week COT Index per futures market
- tell fresh crowding apart from stale crowding
- export a ranked screener output to JSON and Markdown
- keep thin-history markets visible instead of dropping them

## Example prompts
- Run the screen across the core futures set and show me what's crowded: `python3 skills/cot-contrarian-detector/scripts/screen_cot_crowding.py --core --output-dir reports/`
- Check positioning for `ES`, `GC` and `CL`
- Who is trapped in gold right now?

description: Detect crowded speculative positioning in CFTC futures markets (COT report analysis) to find contrarian setups using Jason Shapiro's methodology. Screens large-speculator ("non-commercial") net positioning across 65 futures markets (indices, rates, FX, metals, energy, crypto) via the FMP Commitment of Traders API, computes a 3-year and 26-week COT Index per market, and classifies extremes as CROWDED_LONG / CROWDED_SHORT. Use when the user asks about COT report analysis, crowded positioning, "who is trapped", speculative positioning extremes, contrarian futures setups, or wants to run Jason Shapiro-style analysis. This skill automates crowding DETECTION only (step 1 of 5) — it does not generate trade signals by itself.

# COT Contrarian Detector

## Overview

Implements step 1 of Jason Shapiro's COT (Commitment of Traders) contrarian
process: detect when large speculators are crowded into one side of a futures
market. Crowded positioning is a *precondition* for a contrarian trade, not a
trade signal — a market only becomes tradable once crowding is confirmed by a
news failure and price-action reversal (steps 2-3), which this skill guides
the user through manually.

**Core thesis (Shapiro):** Large speculators (hedge funds, CTAs, momentum
traders) tend to be maximally positioned at trend exhaustion, not trend
inception. When they are already crowded onto one side, the next big move is
statistically more likely to run them over than to reward them further. Fade
the *speculators*, not the commercials (commercials hedge for structural
reasons and are not a crowd-psychology signal).

## When to Use This Skill

**English:**
- "What markets are the speculators crowded into right now?"
- "Run a COT report analysis" / "Show me COT positioning extremes"
- "Is anyone 'trapped' in gold / the dollar / bonds right now?"
- User wants to find contrarian futures setups
- User asks for a Jason Shapiro-style COT screen

**Japanese:**
- 「COTレポートで買われすぎ・売られすぎのポジションを調べて」
```
