## What it does

The skill covers three things: attributing spend to a team or service with external labels in Alloy, cutting metric cardinality through Adaptive Metrics, and dropping noisy logs plus tail-sampling traces. It ships Alloy config snippets, commands to reload the agent and checks that labels actually reached Grafana Cloud, along with an optimization checklist and usage alert rules.

You need a Grafana Cloud stack with Adaptive Metrics, Logs and Traces enabled, Alloy or Grafana Agent already ingesting telemetry, and an API key scoped to `metrics:write`, `logs:write` and `traces:write`. Applying Adaptive recommendations requires admin access to the stack — otherwise you are stuck reviewing rules you cannot turn on.

The metric workflow advises testing in Preview mode before applying, then comparing series counts against a baseline captured beforehand. Rollback is either disabling the rule in the UI or calling `DELETE /v1/rules/<id>`.

## Requirements
- Works with: Grafana

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add grafana/skills --skill cost-management -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/cost-management/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/cost-management/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add grafana/skills --skill cost-management -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/cost-management/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add grafana/skills --skill cost-management -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/cost-management/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install grafana/skills cost-management
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/cost-management/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add grafana/skills --skill cost-management -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/grafana/skills --path skills/grafana-cloud/cost-management
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/cost-management/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add grafana/skills --skill cost-management -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/grafana/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/grafana-cloud/cost-management/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- attribute a Grafana Cloud bill to specific teams and services
- shrink metric cardinality using Adaptive Metrics recommendations
- drop health-probe logs from the Alloy pipeline
- tail-sample traces while keeping errors and slow spans
- set a usage alert before ingestion hits quota

## Example prompts
- our Grafana bill is too high, figure out what's driving it
- add team and project labels to the Alloy config so I can see spend per team
- alert me before log ingestion gets close to quota

description: Cut your Grafana Cloud bill by attributing spend to teams and reducing telemetry volume. Covers FOCUS-compliant billing dashboards, cost-attribution labels in Alloy, Adaptive Metrics (cardinality reduction), Adaptive Logs (drop/sample), Adaptive Traces (tail sampling), usage alerts, and an optimization checklist. Use when investigating a high Grafana Cloud bill, attributing observability cost to a team or service, reducing active series / log bytes / trace spans, or setting up usage / quota alerts — even when the user says "our Grafana bill is too high", "who's burning the most metrics", "drop debug logs", "sample our traces", or "alert me before we hit quota" without naming Cost Management.

# Grafana Cloud Cost Management

Reduce metric / log / trace spend with Adaptive signals + cost-attribution labels.

## Prerequisites

- A Grafana Cloud stack with Adaptive Metrics / Logs / Traces enabled (visible under **Cost Management**)
- Alloy (or Grafana Agent) ingesting telemetry, with API key in scope `metrics:write` + `logs:write` (+ `traces:write`)
- Admin access to the stack to apply Adaptive recommendations

## Common Workflows

### 1. Attribute cost to a team / service

```alloy
# 1. Add external labels in Alloy (metrics + logs configs)
prometheus.remote_write "cloud" {
  endpoint { url = sys.env("PROMETHEUS_URL") /* ... */ }
  external_labels = { team = "platform", project = "checkout-service" }
}
```

```bash
# 2. Reload Alloy
curl -X POST http://localhost:12345/-/reload
# 3. Verify labels arrived in Grafana Cloud
#    In Explore, run:  count by (team, project) ({__name__=~".+"})
#    Then visit Cost Management → group by `team` / `project`
```

See [`references/adaptive-signals.md`](references/adaptive-signals.md) for the full Alloy snippet.

### 2. Cut metric cardinality with Adaptive Metrics

```bash
# 1. Pull recommendations
curl https://<stack>.grafana.net/api/plugins/grafana-adaptive-metrics-app/resources/v1/recommendations \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer <token>" | jq '.recommendations | length'
# 2. In the UI: Grafana Cloud → Adaptive Metrics → review rules sorted by series-reduction impact
# 3. Test in "Preview" mode before applying
# 4. Apply (takes effect within 5 min)
# 5. Verify — series count should drop on the affected metrics
#    Before applying, capture baseline:
#      count({__name__="http_request_duration_seconds_bucket"})
#    Wait 10 min after apply, run again — expect 10x+ reduction for high-card metrics.
# Rollback if needed: open the rule in the UI → Disable, or DELETE /v1/rules/<id>.
```

### 3. Drop noisy logs in Alloy

```alloy
