## What it does

The skill takes a trade history and works out realized gains under each accounting method. FIFO sells the oldest lots, LIFO the newest, HIFO the most expensive ones, specific ID lets you name the lots yourself, and average cost spreads one weighted price across everything you hold. Partial sells are handled: sell 120 units when the oldest lot holds only 100, and the rest comes out of the next lot.

It runs on Python 3.10+ with no external dependencies. Trade history goes in as a list of dicts or a CSV with `date`, `action`, `token`, `quantity`, `price_usd`, `fee_usd` columns. A separate section covers special events: airdrops, token migrations, staking rewards, LP entry and exit, multi-hop swaps. An airdrop is treated as income at fair market value on the date received, and that same value becomes the basis for later sales.

What you get is arithmetic. The README states plainly that this is not tax or legal advice and points you to a qualified professional, because the rules differ by jurisdiction and keep changing. So check which method your jurisdiction actually accepts before you file, since switching from FIFO to HIFO moves the number without making it valid on its own.

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add agiprolabs/claude-trading-skills --skill cost-basis-engine -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/cost-basis-engine/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/cost-basis-engine/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add agiprolabs/claude-trading-skills --skill cost-basis-engine -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/cost-basis-engine/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add agiprolabs/claude-trading-skills --skill cost-basis-engine -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/cost-basis-engine/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install agiprolabs/claude-trading-skills cost-basis-engine
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/cost-basis-engine/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add agiprolabs/claude-trading-skills --skill cost-basis-engine -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/agiprolabs/claude-trading-skills --path skills/cost-basis-engine
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/cost-basis-engine/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add agiprolabs/claude-trading-skills --skill cost-basis-engine -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/agiprolabs/claude-trading-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/cost-basis-engine/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- compute realized gains under FIFO for a filing
- compare the tax hit of LIFO and HIFO on one trade history
- split a partial sell across several lots
- record an airdrop as income and carry it into basis
- pick specific lots to sell by their IDs

## Example prompts
- Compute cost basis on my trade history with FIFO and show the realized gains
- Compare HIFO and LIFO results on this CSV with date, action, token, quantity, price_usd, fee_usd columns
- I'm selling 120 units — break it down by lot and work out the gain using average cost

# Cost Basis Engine

Compute cost basis for crypto trades using multiple accounting methods and compare the resulting tax liability across methods. This skill handles the full complexity of on-chain activity: partial sells, token migrations, airdrops, staking rewards, LP entry/exit, and multi-hop swaps.

> **Disclaimer**: This skill provides computational tools for informational purposes only. It does not constitute tax, legal, or financial advice. Consult a qualified tax professional for your specific situation. Tax law varies by jurisdiction and changes frequently.

## Prerequisites

- Python 3.10+
- No external dependencies required (standard library only)
- Trade history as a list of dicts or CSV with columns: `date`, `action`, `token`, `quantity`, `price_usd`, `fee_usd`

## Methods Overview

| Method | Logic | Best For |
|--------|-------|----------|
| **FIFO** | First lots purchased are sold first | Simplicity, many jurisdictions' default |
| **LIFO** | Last lots purchased are sold first | Deferring gains when prices rise over time |
| **HIFO** | Highest-cost lots are sold first | Minimizing current tax liability |
| **Specific ID** | Trader selects which lots to sell | Maximum control, requires record-keeping |
| **Average Cost** | Weighted average of all held lots | Simplicity, required in some jurisdictions |

## 1. FIFO (First-In, First-Out)

Sell the oldest lots first. This is the default method in the US if no other method is elected.

```python
def fifo_sell(lots: list[dict], sell_qty: float, sell_price: float) -> list[dict]:
    """Sell using FIFO. lots sorted oldest-first."""
    remaining = sell_qty
    realized = []
    while remaining > 0 and lots:
        lot = lots[0]
        used = min(lot["qty"], remaining)
        gain = (sell_price - lot["cost_per_unit"]) * used
        realized.append({"qty": used, "basis": lot["cost_per_unit"], "gain": gain})
        lot["qty"] -= used
        remaining -= used
        if lot["qty"] <= 0:
            lots.pop(0)
    return realized
```

### Partial sell example

You hold three lots of TOKEN:
