## What it does

The skill ships as a set of rule files prefixed `model-`, `partition-`, `query-`, `sdk-`, `index-`, `throughput-`, `global-`, `monitoring-`, `pattern-`, `tooling-` and `vector-`. Each rule lives in its own file under `rules/`, and `SKILL.md` holds a priority table: data modeling and partition key design are CRITICAL, query optimization and SDK patterns are HIGH. The agent pulls the file it needs for the topic at hand.

Inside are 100+ rules across 12 categories. Data modeling covers embedding related items, referencing large ones, the 2MB item limit, 128-level nesting depth, and the 20GB logical partition limit. Query rules push point reads via `ReadItem`, parameterized queries, continuation-token pagination, and avoiding full container scans. SDK rules cover reusing `CosmosClient` as a singleton, async APIs, retrying 429s with retry-after, and Direct mode in production.

Scope is Cosmos DB NoSQL only. PostgreSQL, MySQL, DynamoDB, Cassandra, Azure SQL, Redis and Elasticsearch are out, and so are Cosmos DB for PostgreSQL (vCore) and Cosmos DB for MongoDB vCore. Worth checking which database your project actually runs before installing.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AzureCosmosDB/cosmosdb-agent-kit --skill cosmosdb-best-practices -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/cosmosdb-best-practices/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/cosmosdb-best-practices/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AzureCosmosDB/cosmosdb-agent-kit --skill cosmosdb-best-practices -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/cosmosdb-best-practices/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AzureCosmosDB/cosmosdb-agent-kit --skill cosmosdb-best-practices -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/cosmosdb-best-practices/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install AzureCosmosDB/cosmosdb-agent-kit cosmosdb-best-practices
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/cosmosdb-best-practices/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AzureCosmosDB/cosmosdb-agent-kit --skill cosmosdb-best-practices -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/AzureCosmosDB/cosmosdb-agent-kit --path skills/cosmosdb-best-practices
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/cosmosdb-best-practices/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AzureCosmosDB/cosmosdb-agent-kit --skill cosmosdb-best-practices -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/AzureCosmosDB/cosmosdb-agent-kit/tree/HEAD/skills/cosmosdb-best-practices/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pick a partition key that avoids hotspots
- rewrite a cross-partition query as a point read
- set up CosmosClient as a singleton
- decide between embedding and referencing related data
- handle 429 responses with retry-after

## Example prompts
- Review this Cosmos DB data model and suggest a partition key
- Optimize this query, it scans every partition
- Rewrite the CosmosClient setup following the sdk- rules
