## What it does

The skill walks through the setup in order: `ProjectConfig` with a project path or manifest, then a parsing strategy (`dbt_manifest`, `dbt_ls`, `dbt_ls_file`, `automatic`), an execution mode, the warehouse connection through `ProfileConfig`, and test behavior. The last step assembles a `DbtDag` or `DbtTaskGroup`.

Before writing anything, it asks you to confirm six things: the dbt engine (Core, not Fusion), warehouse type, Airflow version, execution environment, DAG versus TaskGroup, and manifest availability. If you run Fusion, this is the wrong skill — there is a separate `cosmos-dbt-fusion`. The skill targets Cosmos 1.11+ and Airflow 3.x; on Airflow 2.x you adjust imports per Appendix A.

Do not hardcode secrets in `profiles.yml` — the skill points you to environment variables instead. `dbt_ls_file` ignores `select` and `exclude`, and a remote manifest needs `manifest_conn_id`. Worth checking before the first run, not after.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add astronomer/agents --skill cosmos-dbt-core -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/cosmos-dbt-core/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/cosmos-dbt-core/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add astronomer/agents --skill cosmos-dbt-core -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/cosmos-dbt-core/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add astronomer/agents --skill cosmos-dbt-core -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/cosmos-dbt-core/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install astronomer/agents cosmos-dbt-core
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/cosmos-dbt-core/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add astronomer/agents --skill cosmos-dbt-core -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/astronomer/agents --path skills/cosmos-dbt-core
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/cosmos-dbt-core/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add astronomer/agents --skill cosmos-dbt-core -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- turn an existing dbt Core project into an Airflow DAG
- pick an execution mode that fits your infrastructure
- wire a warehouse connection through an Airflow Connection without hardcoded secrets
- control when dbt tests run relative to models
- pass dbt vars from XCom into a task

## Example prompts
- Turn my dbt Core project into an Airflow DAG with Cosmos, warehouse is Snowflake
- Help me pick a load mode for a large project with containerized execution
- Build a DbtTaskGroup inside my existing DAG, tests after each model

# Cosmos + dbt Core: Implementation Checklist

Execute steps in order. Prefer the simplest configuration that meets the user's constraints.

> **Version note**: This skill targets Cosmos 1.11+ and Airflow 3.x. If the user is on Airflow 2.x, adjust imports accordingly (see Appendix A).
>
> **Reference**: Latest stable: https://pypi.org/project/astronomer-cosmos/

> **Before starting**, confirm: (1) dbt engine = Core (not Fusion → use **cosmos-dbt-fusion**), (2) warehouse type, (3) Airflow version, (4) execution environment (Airflow env / venv / container), (5) DbtDag vs DbtTaskGroup vs individual operators, (6) manifest availability.

## 1. Configure Project (ProjectConfig)

| Approach | When to use | Required param |
|----------|-------------|----------------|
| Project path | Files available locally | `dbt_project_path` |
| Manifest only | `dbt_manifest` load | `manifest_path` + `project_name` |

```python
from cosmos import ProjectConfig
_project_config = ProjectConfig(
    dbt_project_path="/path/to/dbt/project",
    # manifest_path="/path/to/manifest.json",  # for dbt_manifest load mode
    # project_name="my_project",  # if using manifest_path without dbt_project_path
    # install_dbt_deps=False,  # if deps precomputed in CI
)
```

## 2. Choose Parsing Strategy (RenderConfig)

Pick ONE load mode based on constraints:

| Load mode | When to use | Required inputs | Constraints |
|-----------|-------------|-----------------|-------------|
| `dbt_manifest` | Large projects; containerized execution; fastest | `ProjectConfig.manifest_path` | Remote manifest needs `manifest_conn_id` |
| `dbt_ls` | Complex selectors; need dbt-native selection | dbt installed OR `dbt_executable_path` | Can also be used with containerized execution |
| `dbt_ls_file` | dbt_ls selection without running dbt_ls every parse | `RenderConfig.dbt_ls_path` | `select`/`exclude` won't work |
| `automatic` (default) | Simple setups; let Cosmos pick | (none) | Falls back: manifest → dbt_ls → custom |

> **CRITICAL**: Containerized execution (`DOCKER`/`KUBERNETES`/etc.)

```python
from cosmos import RenderConfig, LoadMode
_render_config = RenderConfig(
    load_method=LoadMode.DBT_MANIFEST,  # or DBT_LS, DBT_LS_FILE, AUTOMATIC
)
```
