## What it does

\`deep-research` walks through seven steps: frame the question, plan the sources, run discovery, synthesize, write the brief, archive it, surface it in chat. Sources are picked per question — web search, specific URLs, `agent-browser` for auth-walled or JS-heavy pages, the `last30days` skill for recent Reddit, X, YouTube and HN chatter, agent memory, and Notion. Discovery passes run in parallel where possible.

The output is a markdown brief: a short TL;DR, findings grouped by theme, a contradictions section, gaps, and recommended next steps. Every claim carries a source pointer, and disagreements between sources get surfaced rather than averaged out. For fast-moving topics it advises de-weighting sources older than 12 months.

Each run is written to `${MAKERSKILLS_CONFIG:-$HOME/.config/makerskills}/deep-research/archive/` as `<YYYY-MM-DD>-<slug>.md`, with a line appended to `INDEX.md`. Keep archives out of the skill's own folder: installs and upgrades re-sync it from source and wipe whatever sits there. Notion access needs a key in `$NOTION_API_KEY`. This is not for standing monitoring or pulling a single post or video — that's what `radar`, `social-fetch` and `watch-video` cover.

## Requirements
- Works with: Notion

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add coreyhaines31/makerskills --skill deep-research -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/deep-research/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/deep-research/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add coreyhaines31/makerskills --skill deep-research -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/deep-research/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add coreyhaines31/makerskills --skill deep-research -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/deep-research/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install coreyhaines31/makerskills deep-research
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/deep-research/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add coreyhaines31/makerskills --skill deep-research -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/coreyhaines31/makerskills --path skills/deep-research
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/deep-research/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add coreyhaines31/makerskills --skill deep-research -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/coreyhaines31/makerskills/tree/HEAD/skills/deep-research/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- gather competitor material before a sales call
- validate a new business idea against the market
- decide which database or auth provider to use
- run due diligence on a partner or podcast guest
- find what people are saying about a topic right now

## Example prompts
- /deep-research the market for screenshot tools
- investigate which databases startups pick today
- do a deep dive on SaaS pricing models

description: "When you want multi-source, multi-step research on a topic — competitor research before a sales call, market research for a new business idea, positioning angles, due diligence on a partnership or podcast guest, tech decision research (which DB, which auth), or any \"I need to actually understand X.\" Combines web search, URL fetch, agent-browser, last30days (Reddit/X/YouTube/HN/web recency), memory, and Notion. Outputs a structured brief with citations, contradictions, gaps, and recommended next steps. Archives every research run to ~/.config/makerskills/deep-research/archive/ so past work is searchable. Triggers on \"/deep-research,\" \"research X,\" \"investigate X,\" \"do a deep dive on X,\" \"look into X,\" \"what's actually happening with X,\" \"due diligence on X,\" \"validate this market.\" Differs from a one-shot web search: this is multi-pass with verification. # /deep-research — Multi-source research with archive

Plans, executes, and synthesizes research from multiple sources. Archives the output so the corpus compounds.

## Step 1 — Frame the question

Restate the research question in one tight sentence. If ambiguous, ask the user:
- What's the decision this research will inform?
- What's the minimum useful answer? (Saves over-researching.)
- Any sources to prioritize or avoid?

Output: `**Research question:** <one sentence>`

## Step 2 — Plan the sources

Pick from this menu based on the question type. Note which sources you'll hit and why.

| Source | When to use | How (tool names vary by agent) |
|---|---|---|
| Web search (Google) | Authoritative articles, docs, official statements | Your agent's web search (e.g. `WebSearch` in Claude Code) |
| `/last30days` | What people are *actually saying* right now — Reddit, X, YouTube, HN, web recency | The `last30days` skill, if installed. Otherwise skip it and note the gap |
| Specific URLs | When the user hands over starting URLs | Your agent's URL fetch (e.g. `WebFetch`), or `curl` + `defuddle` |
| Browsable pages (auth-walled, JS-heavy) | Pricing pages, product tours, profiles | `agent-browser` CLI (any agent with a shell) |
| Memory | Prior research / decisions / context the user already captured | your agent's memory, or grep `${MAKERSKILLS_MEMORY:-${MAKERSKILLS_CONFIG:-$HOME/.config/makerskills}/memory}/` |
```
