Runs a structured 6–8 question decision workflow based on the 37signals framework and logs the rationale to an archive with a revisit date.

## What it does

The skill turns decision-making into a documented habit. It draws from the 37signals Guide to Making Decisions along with additions like opportunity cost analysis. Rather than forcing the full list of 38 questions, it triages 6 to 8 load-bearing questions based on reversibility, stakes, and time pressure. Analysis paralysis stops here.

Before asking questions, the workflow screens out decisions that are already finalized or lack clear alternatives. If you are only seeking validation, it calls that out directly. The assistant pushes back on vague replies like "should be fine" and demands clear trade-offs. Each outcome is stored in `~/.config/makerskills/decide/archive/` with an `<!-- in-progress -->` resume marker and a future revisit date.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add coreyhaines31/makerskills --skill decide -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/decide/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/decide/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add coreyhaines31/makerskills --skill decide -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/decide/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add coreyhaines31/makerskills --skill decide -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/decide/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install coreyhaines31/makerskills decide
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/decide/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add coreyhaines31/makerskills --skill decide -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/coreyhaines31/makerskills --path skills/decide
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/decide/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add coreyhaines31/makerskills --skill decide -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/coreyhaines31/makerskills/tree/HEAD/skills/decide/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pick between tough technical options without endless deliberation
- evaluate reversibility and opportunity costs before committing to a plan
- document trade-offs and rationale in a structured local archive
- resume interrupted decision-making sessions without repeating answers

## Example prompts
- /decide
- help me decide: should I split this monolith into microservices
- stuck on a decision between AWS Lambda and ECS

description: When you have a decision to make and want a structured workflow that picks the load-bearing questions, walks through them, reaches a call (or "wait"), and archives the rationale for future reference. Based on the 37signals Guide to Making Decisions (38 questions) plus house additions like Q39 opportunity cost ("what does saying yes displace?"). Triages to 6–8 relevant questions per decision instead of forcing the full set. Archives every decision to ~/.config/makerskills/decide/archive/ with a revisit date so you can check later whether the call was right. Triggers on "/decide," "help me decide," "should I [X]," "I need to make a decision about," "stuck on a decision," "deciding between," "go/no-go on," "what should I do about." This is both the decision-making workflow AND the decision log — making the decision is the act of logging it.

# /decide — Structured decision workflow + archive

Picks load-bearing questions from the 37signals guide, walks through them, reaches a call, archives the rationale with a revisit date.

**Posture:** warm framing, unmoved bar. You're on the user's side, which is exactly why you don't accept "should be fine" as an answer. Attack vague answers, never the person.

## Step 0 — Check it's a live decision

**Resume first.** Look in the archive dir (Step 6) for files whose first line starts with `<!-- in-progress`. If one matches this decision, offer to pick it up: read it, continue at the step it records, and never re-ask a question that already has an answer.

Before intake, screen for three cases where running the full process would be theater. If more than one matches, the first row wins (a signed lease is "already decided" even when the user also wants validation).

| Signal | Do this instead |
|---|---|
| **Already decided** — signed, shipped, announced ("I signed the lease yesterday") | Say so plainly. Offer a **retroactive log**: record the call, the expected outcome, and a revisit date so the user finds out whether it was right. Skip triage. Ask only for the rejected alternative, accepted downside, and what "right" looks like. Archive with `**Decide by:** already decided <date>`, `**Decision:** Logged retroactively — <the call>`, and `## Questions` → `none — logged retroactively`. |
| **Validation-seeking** — "help me feel good about it," "just confirm X" | Name it kindly: *"I can run this, but it only helps if the answer is allowed to be no. Still want it?"* Proceed only on those terms. |
| **No options yet** — a direction or vibe ("something in health tech") | Ask for 2–3 concrete options, even rough ones. If they have one specific idea but no alternatives, route to `business-brainstorm` ("should this exist?") and stop here. If there's no specific idea at all, say honestly that neither skill can help yet — offer `deep-research` on the space to surface concrete problems worth deciding about. |

## Step 1 — Capture the decision

Get from the user:
- **The decision** in one sentence (what are we deciding between?)
- **Stakes**: low / medium / high (how much does this matter?)
```
