## What it does

The skill activates when you ask for image classification, OCR, sentiment analysis, sound classification or wiring an existing `.mlmodel` into an Xcode project. It opens with questions through `AskUserQuestion` about the task, whether you already have a trained model, and your latency budget. Then it scans the project with `Glob` and `Grep` for `import CoreML`, `import Vision` and `import NaturalLanguage`, and asks whether to extend what it found or replace it.

A decision guide separates Core ML from Foundation Models in Apple Intelligence, so you pick the right framework before any code appears. For common jobs that need no custom model, it points at the built-in frameworks: Vision for faces, poses, barcodes and text recognition, NaturalLanguage for language ID, entities and embeddings. Create ML training is covered for four cases — images, text, tabular data and sound — with folder layouts and CSV or JSON formats.

You still need working knowledge of Swift and Xcode layout. The skill writes code and edits files, but it will not build the app for you. Check your deployment target first: Core ML and Vision ask for iOS 11+, NaturalLanguage for iOS 12+.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rshankras/claude-code-apple-skills --skill core-ml -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/core-ml/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/core-ml/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rshankras/claude-code-apple-skills --skill core-ml -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/core-ml/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rshankras/claude-code-apple-skills --skill core-ml -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/core-ml/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install rshankras/claude-code-apple-skills core-ml
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/core-ml/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rshankras/claude-code-apple-skills --skill core-ml -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/rshankras/claude-code-apple-skills --path skills/core-ml
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/core-ml/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rshankras/claude-code-apple-skills --skill core-ml -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/rshankras/claude-code-apple-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/core-ml/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- wire a trained `.mlmodel` into an Xcode project and run a prediction
- read text off an image with `VNRecognizeTextRequest`
- detect sentiment and language without training a model
- train an image or sound classifier in Create ML
- decide between Core ML and Foundation Models for a given task

## Example prompts
- Add an image classifier to my project using Core ML, the model is in `Models/`
- I need OCR on photos, build it with the Vision framework
- Help me train a sound classification model in Create ML, my audio is sorted into folders

# Core ML Skills

Combined advisory, generator, and workflow skill for integrating machine learning into Apple platform apps. Covers Core ML model integration, Vision framework image analysis, NaturalLanguage framework text processing, Create ML training, and on-device model optimization.

## When This Skill Activates

Use this skill when the user:
- Wants to add ML capabilities to their app
- Needs to integrate a Core ML model (.mlmodel) into an Xcode project
- Wants to use the Vision framework for image analysis (faces, text recognition, body pose, object detection)
- Wants to use the NaturalLanguage framework for text processing (sentiment, entities, language detection)
- Needs to train a custom model with Create ML
- Wants to optimize a model for on-device use (quantization, pruning, palettization)
- Needs to choose between Core ML and Foundation Models (Apple Intelligence)
- Asks about image classification, object detection, sound classification, or tabular data prediction
- Wants real-time camera + ML processing

## Decision Guide: Core ML vs Foundation Models

Before generating code, determine which framework is appropriate.

### Use Foundation Models (Apple Intelligence) When:
- You need general-purpose text generation, summarization, or conversational AI
- Target is iOS 26+ / macOS 26+ (Foundation Models requires Apple Silicon + latest OS)
- The task is open-ended language understanding or generation
- You want `@Generable` structured output from natural language
- See `apple-intelligence/foundation-models/` skill for implementation

### Use Core ML When:
- You need specialized ML: image classification, object detection, sound classification, custom regression/classification
- You have a trained model (.mlmodel, .mlpackage) or plan to train one
- You need broad device support (iOS 14+ / macOS 11+)
- The task requires domain-specific predictions (medical imaging, product recognition, custom NLP)
- Performance-critical inference on Neural Engine or GPU

### Use Vision Framework When (No Custom Model Needed):
