Migrates Cordova or PhoneGap mobile apps to Capacitor step by step. It keeps user storage data safe and guides the replacement of legacy plugins.

## What it does

The skill manages migrations from Apache Cordova or PhoneGap to Capacitor. It audits `config.xml` preferences and existing dependencies first. This prevents broken builds later. Then it installs `@capacitor/core` and creates the native project structure.

Native folders in `ios/` and `android/` become committed source code. Capacitor never regenerates them during sync. Because the app origin changes to `capacitor://localhost`, users risk losing their `localStorage` and IndexedDB records. The skill configures `iosScheme` and `androidScheme` to protect that data.

Cordova plugins can stay in the project temporarily. In Capacitor 9, the Cordova runtime is optional. It is bundled only when at least one legacy Cordova plugin remains installed. Once you remove the final plugin, leftover `deviceready` listeners never fire.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Cap-go/capgo-skills --skill cordova-to-capacitor -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/cordova-to-capacitor/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/cordova-to-capacitor/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Cap-go/capgo-skills --skill cordova-to-capacitor -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/cordova-to-capacitor/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Cap-go/capgo-skills --skill cordova-to-capacitor -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/cordova-to-capacitor/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Cap-go/capgo-skills cordova-to-capacitor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/cordova-to-capacitor/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Cap-go/capgo-skills --skill cordova-to-capacitor -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Cap-go/capgo-skills --path skills/cordova-to-capacitor
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/cordova-to-capacitor/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Cap-go/capgo-skills --skill cordova-to-capacitor -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- audit legacy `cordova-*` packages and `deviceready` listeners
- port app identifiers and preferences from `config.xml`
- preserve `localStorage` and IndexedDB records by setting custom schemes
- replace deprecated Cordova plugins with Capacitor equivalents

## Example prompts
- Audit Cordova dependencies in this project and prepare a migration plan for Capacitor
- Migrate settings from config.xml to Capacitor config and add ios and android platforms
- Configure iosScheme and androidScheme to keep existing IndexedDB data intact

name: cordova-to-capacitor
description: Migrates an Apache Cordova, PhoneGap, or Ionic-Cordova app to Capacitor. Use when the project has config.xml, a platforms/ or plugins/ folder, cordova-* or phonegap-* dependencies, @awesome-cordova-plugins or @ionic-native wrappers, deviceready listeners, or cordova.plugins.* calls, and the user wants Capacitor native projects, Capacitor/Capgo plugin replacements, config.xml preference migration, and preserved localStorage/IndexedDB data (iosScheme/androidScheme). Covers keeping Cordova plugins temporarily, Capacitor 9 making the Cordova runtime optional (CapacitorCordova only bundled when a Cordova plugin is installed), skipped incompatible plugins, and removing Cordova afterwards. Do not use for porting a single Cordova plugin's native source into a Capacitor plugin, Capacitor major upgrades (capacitor-app-upgrades), Appflow/cordova-plugin-ionic live updates (ionic-appflow-migration), or non-Cordova web apps (webapp-to-capacitor, framework-to-capacitor).

# Cordova to Capacitor Migration

Move a Cordova app onto Capacitor incrementally: Capacitor first, plugins one by one, Cordova removed last.

## When to Use

TRIGGER when:
- `config.xml`, `platforms/`, `plugins/`, `cordova-android`/`cordova-ios`, or `cordova-plugin-*` are present and the user wants Capacitor.
- Code waits on `deviceready` or calls `navigator.camera`, `window.plugins.*`, `cordova.plugins.*`, `@awesome-cordova-plugins/*`, `@ionic-native/*`.
- After migration: data loss on first launch, missing Cordova plugin behaviour, or Capacitor 9 build errors referencing Cordova symbols.

Do not use for:
- Rewriting a Cordova plugin's Java/Objective-C as a Capacitor plugin (plugin-level port) -> follow Capacitor plugin docs; `capacitor-plugins` for existing replacements.
- Upgrading Capacitor majors -> `capacitor-app-upgrades`.
- Replacing Appflow Live Updates (`cordova-plugin-ionic`) -> `ionic-appflow-migration` + `capgo-live-updates`.
- Framework build config (Angular output path, Vite) -> `framework-to-capacitor`.
