## What it does

The skill covers wiring an assistant into a running `@assistant-ui/react` app. Every hook runs inside `AssistantRuntimeProvider`. Behavior comes from `useAssistantInstructions`, and page state comes from `useAssistantContext({ getContext })`. That callback is re-read at send time, so a closure over fresh state works while a precomputed string goes stale.

Three levels of access follow. `makeAssistantVisible(Component, { clickable, editable })` exposes DOM to the model: with no options it only sees `outerHTML`, `clickable` allows clicks, `editable` allows editing `<input>` and `<textarea>`. Interactables carry two-way state and auto-generate an `update_{name}` tool from your `stateSchema`. Two flavors exist: `unstable_useInteractable` for app-scoped panels, `unstable_interactableTool` inside `defineToolkit` for thread-scoped artifacts. Mount the scope once with `AuiConfig({ unstable_interactables: unstable_Interactables() })`.

The legacy `Interactables()`, `useAssistantInteractable` and `useInteractableState` are deprecated as of 2026-06-14 and scheduled for removal on or after 2026-09-14, so write new code against the `unstable_` API. The two scopes are mutually exclusive — keep exactly one in `AuiConfig`. Declare `stateSchema` and `initialState` outside the component, because a new schema identity on each render re-registers the interactable and wipes its state. For LLM tools reach for the `tools` skill, for runtime and thread state use `runtime`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add assistant-ui/skills --skill copilots -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/copilots/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/copilots/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add assistant-ui/skills --skill copilots -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/copilots/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add assistant-ui/skills --skill copilots -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/copilots/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install assistant-ui/skills copilots
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/copilots/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add assistant-ui/skills --skill copilots -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/assistant-ui/skills --path assistant-ui/skills/copilots
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/copilots/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add assistant-ui/skills --skill copilots -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- tell the assistant which page and selection the user is on
- let the model click a button in a rendered component
- allow editing input fields straight from the chat
- keep a panel's state in sync through an auto-generated tool
- share tools and instructions from an embedded iframe with the parent window

## Example prompts
- Steer the assistant toward checkout with useAssistantInstructions and feed it the current URL via useAssistantContext
- Make the cart visible to the assistant: makeAssistantVisible(Cart, { clickable: true, editable: true })
- Add an interactable for the filter panel with unstable_useInteractable and keep stateSchema outside the component

description: "Grounds an assistant in your app with assistant-ui copilots. Use when steering behavior with useAssistantInstructions, feeding send-time app state through useAssistantContext({ getContext }), exposing components with makeAssistantVisible(Component, { clickable, editable }), giving the model two-way component state through interactables (unstable_useInteractable for app-scoped panels, unstable_interactableTool inside defineToolkit for thread-scoped artifacts, mounted via AuiConfig({ unstable_interactables: unstable_Interactables() })), registering instructions and tools with aui.modelContext.register, or bridging model context across an iframe with AssistantFrameProvider and useAssistantFrameHost. Legacy Interactables(), useAssistantInteractable, and useInteractableState are deprecated in favor of the unstable_ API. Reach for this when the assistant should read the page, click or edit UI, or update component state. For LLM tools use tools; for runtime and thread state use runtime."

# assistant-ui Copilots

**Always consult [assistant-ui.com/llms.txt](https://www.assistant-ui.com/llms.txt) for the latest API.**

Copilots ground an assistant in your running app: steer it with instructions, feed it lazy app state, let it read and drive rendered components, give it two way state through interactables, and share model context across an iframe boundary.
