# cook

The skill takes an approved spec or a focused task and turns it into code: edits sources without tripping over stale spots, runs tests and lint, then hands the work off.

## What it does

\`cook` is a slash command and skill from the easy-cheese set. It accepts a pasted spec, focused acceptance criteria, or an unambiguous task, and returns a report plus a route to the next step: `/age`, `/mold`, or done. An explicit spec path works as `/cook .cheese/specs/<slug>.md`; a bare slug resolves through `python3 skills/cook/scripts/cook.pyz artifact-path specs <slug>`.

Five steps run inside. Contract comes first: behavior, non-goals, scope and gates get confirmed, and no code is written without the shape-check block. Then implementation, the project's quality gates, a fresh-context review, and a Press loop for behavior work. The `--prototype` flag switches to a plan, spike, check loop that stabilizes round by round. `--auto` chains `/age` and `/cure` after the in-Cook Press loop, while `--open-pr` lets terminal `/plate` publish — auto mode never adds that flag.

For behavior work the skill does not require a failing test first and does not load a gate receipt; it owns first acceptance coverage before Press. An existing test must not be weakened. Fuzzy tasks get routed to `/mold`, and no-write discussion or review-only work goes to `/culture` and `/age`. There is a bar for the fast path too: bypassing `/mold` works only when the task names a bug or call site in one or two files and has a failing test or an expected-output check.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add paulnsorensen/easy-cheese --skill cook -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/cook/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/cook/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add paulnsorensen/easy-cheese --skill cook -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/cook/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add paulnsorensen/easy-cheese --skill cook -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/cook/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install paulnsorensen/easy-cheese cook
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/cook/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add paulnsorensen/easy-cheese --skill cook -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/paulnsorensen/easy-cheese --path skills/cook
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/cook/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add paulnsorensen/easy-cheese --skill cook -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/paulnsorensen/easy-cheese/tree/HEAD/skills/cook/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- turn an approved spec into working code
- fix a bug with clear acceptance criteria
- run tests, lint and build after the edits
- spike a prototype and refine it round by round
- hand the result to review and the next phase

## Example prompts
- /cook .cheese/specs/login-fix.md
- implement this spec: the empty-session test fails, fix it
- prototype this parser and we'll refine it round by round

  Implement an approved spec or focused task through stale-safe source edits.
  Use this skill when the user says "implement this", "cook this spec", or "fix this bug".
  Use it for `/cook .cheese/specs/<slug>.md`.
  Also use it when the user says "go" with clear acceptance criteria.
  Run it alone for an unambiguous task.
  Use `--prototype` when the user says "prototype this", "go prototype it", or "spike this out" and wants to refine the result round by round.
  A spec helps but is not required.
  Do not use it for fuzzy planning (`/mold`).
  Do not use it for no-write discussion (`/culture`) or review-only work (`/age`).

# /cook

## Contract

`cook(spec_ref, correction = false) -> handoff(next = age | mold | done)`.

Cook returns `next: mold` for a specification failure.
A fan run also returns `next: mold` for a stalled remediation scope, a curd that does not pass, or partial coverage.

Cook does not require a failing test first and does not load a gate receipt.
For behavior work, Cook owns first acceptance coverage before Press; see `references/tdd-loop.md` § Inner TDD.
This is a reported obligation, not a gate.
For documentation, refactor, test, or appearance work, change that surface and verify it directly.
Use `correction = true` only for an active Press finding or `coverage_gap`; see `references/press-loop.md`.
Do not weaken an existing test.

## Phase entry

Run `python3 skills/cook/scripts/cook.pyz wheypoint-resolve --ref <slug>`.
`authoritative` uses the record; its `working_context` is the first batched `tilth_read`.
`not-found` proceeds cold; `legacy` shows its source and slug, then proceeds.
`gated`, `ambiguous`, and `error` stop and show the payload.
Show advisory `stale-commit` and `grounded-path-missing` findings.
Keep its `record.revision_id` as `<base>` ([§ Base revision](../cheese/references/handback-contract.md#base-revision)).

## Inputs

Accept a pasted spec or issue, focused acceptance criteria, or an unambiguous task.
Read explicit spec paths verbatim.
Resolve a bare slug to `path` from `python3 skills/cook/scripts/cook.pyz artifact-path specs <slug>`.
A Mold spec path or finalized direct inputs enter through § Mold-to-Cook ingress.
Flags:

- `--auto` chains `/age → /cure` after the in-Cook Press loop.
- `--prototype` runs a plan → spike → check loop, then stabilizes; read [`references/prototype-mode.md`](references/prototype-mode.md).
- `--hard` propagates through `/plate`.
