## What it does

The skill distinguishes four context item types. Instructions apply to every prompt; skills, knowledge pointers, and memory events are retrieved when relevant. It also covers naming and folder organization. Before editing, check the active workspace and branch with `get_session_workspace_and_branch`; development work calls for a branch created with `create_workspace_branch`.

Its central rule is to keep context separate from the semantic layer. Context holds procedures, standing preferences, and history; formulas, calculations, and data definitions belong in metrics, attributes, or other semantic objects. For instance, define a revenue formula as a metric, while an instruction can tell the analyst to prefer an existing metric. Putting calculation logic in context duplicates it and risks inconsistencies.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins --skill context-item-creation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/context-item-creation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/context-item-creation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins --skill context-item-creation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/context-item-creation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins --skill context-item-creation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/context-item-creation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins context-item-creation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/context-item-creation/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins --skill context-item-creation -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins --path skills/context-item-creation
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/context-item-creation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins --skill context-item-creation -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins/tree/HEAD/skills/context-item-creation/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- choose the right context item type for a rule or procedure
- keep formulas and data definitions in the semantic layer
- organize context items into folders and name them
- decide whether to extend an existing item

## Example prompts
- Create an instruction telling the analyst to use `orders.net_revenue` for revenue questions.
- Draft an on-demand playbook for churn analysis that segments cohorts and compares retention curves.
- Should this revenue formula be a metric or a context instruction? Explain where it belongs.

name: context-item-creation
description: Guides you through creating context items — instructions, skills, knowledge pointers, and memory events — that give the AI analyst persistent knowledge about your organization. Covers when to create each type, naming conventions, folder organization, and the hard boundary between context (rules and procedures) and the semantic layer (logic and calculations).
---

## Prerequisites

Before creating context items, ensure you are on the correct workspace and branch. Use `get_session_workspace_and_branch` to check the current session context. For development work, create a branch with `create_workspace_branch` (the session switches automatically). See the `workspace-branch` skill for the full workspace/branch tool reference.

---

## Overview

**Context items** are the mechanism for giving the AI analyst persistent, organizational knowledge: standing rules it must always follow, on-demand procedures it can retrieve, external references it can look up, and a historical record of notable events.

Context items belong to the **context layer** — they are consumed by the Honeydew AI analyst at query time to shape its behavior. They are separate from the **semantic layer** (entities, metrics, attributes, relations, domains), which defines your data model and business logic such as metric calculations.

There are four types:

| Type | Subtype | When retrieved | Use for |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Instruction** | `instruction` | Every prompt, automatically | Short standing rules or constraints the model must always respect |
| **Skill** | `skill` | On demand, when relevant | Long-form analysis playbooks and procedural guides |
| **Knowledge** | `knowledge` | On demand, when relevant | Pointers to external content (Confluence, Notion, etc.) |
| **Memory** | `event` | On demand, when relevant | Historical events and decisions that affect data interpretation |

> **Before creating anything, read the critical boundary section below.** Most requests for context items are actually requests to define or document logic — which belongs in the semantic layer, not in context.

---

## THE HARD BOUNDARY: Context vs. Semantic Layer

> **This is the most important rule in this skill. Re-read it every time you are asked to create a context item.**

**Context items are for rules, procedures, and history. They are NOT for logic, calculations, or data definitions.**
