# content-research-and-sourcing

Checks the stats and citations in a draft before it goes out: traces numbers to primary sources, catches AI-fabricated references, kills stale figures.

## What it does

The skill breaks a draft into claims and sorts out which ones carry the piece. Those get the full chain up to the primary source: who ran the study, what the sample was, who funded it. Everything else gets a quick glance, so the check stays proportional.

It works through the FACTS framework: find the load-bearing claims, ascend to the primary source, check freshness and context, test AI output hard, show your sources. Citations from a model are treated as guilty until verified. A working link proves nothing on its own: 29% of fabricated citations carry real DOIs that resolve to unrelated papers. The agent verifies wherever it has web search; where it does not, it writes the checklist and a human clicks the links.

The skill reads `brand-profile` and the format skill of the piece first, so both need to be in the project. Verification happens before scheduling, because WoopSocial has no fact-check layer and a scheduled error is a published error. Health and finance claims face a higher bar: official primaries, careful wording, disclaimers.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill content-research-and-sourcing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/content-research-and-sourcing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/content-research-and-sourcing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill content-research-and-sourcing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/content-research-and-sourcing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill content-research-and-sourcing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/content-research-and-sourcing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install social-media-skills/skills content-research-and-sourcing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/content-research-and-sourcing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill content-research-and-sourcing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/social-media-skills/skills --path skills/content-research-and-sourcing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/content-research-and-sourcing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill content-research-and-sourcing -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/social-media-skills/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/content-research-and-sourcing/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- check the stats in a draft before it ships
- trace a number that keeps circulating through blogs
- catch a citation an AI made up
- attribute a source correctly in a social post
- reframe a claim as an owned observation when no source exists

## Example prompts
- Run the FACTS check on this draft and show me which stats don't hold up
- Is this study citation real? Check that the DOI resolves to that exact paper
- Build the source log: claim, source, date, link

  The research-and-sourcing craft — verify the substance of a piece before it publishes: trace
  stats to primary sources, kill zombie stats, catch AI-hallucinated citations, and attribute
  properly on social. Use when someone has a stat-heavy draft to make publish-ready, wants to
  check if a viral statistic is real, asks how to cite sources, used AI research output, or is
  making health/finance claims. Uses the FACTS framework. Reads brand-profile + the piece's
  format skill first. AI-supplied citations are guilty until verified; a working link is not
  verification; aggregators are leads, not the source; where none exists, reframe as owned
  observation or commission data. The agent verifies where it has search; the human clicks links
  where it doesn't; verification happens before scheduling; WoopSocial publishes. Never invents
  studies or reuses retracted stats. Distinct from idea-generation, data-and-original-research,

## The POV: a post is a stack of claims wearing a voice — verify the stack
2026 made verification structural: generative search tools answered **over 60% of tested news-citation queries
incorrectly** (CJR); fabricated references **surged ~12-fold since 2023** — 1 in 277 PubMed papers now carries
one (Columbia/Lancet audit); a major consultancy shipped a report where **only 5 of 45 citations were
accurate**; and Google's AI Overview cited an April Fool's satire as fact — citogenesis laundering errors into
apparent consensus. Four disciplines follow. **(1) AI-supplied citations are guilty until verified — and a
working link is not verification:** 29% of fabricated citations carry real DOIs resolving to *unrelated*
papers (identifier hijacking); the source must exist AND say what's claimed. **(2) Ubiquity is not evidence:**
the goldfish-attention-span class of zombie stats survives on repetition — the tell is a citation trail that
