# container-lines

This skill adds thin vertical guide lines at the edges of the content container, plus mini corner squares on sections. Useful when a layout feels loose and needs structure.

## What it does

The skill lays out a guide system: two lines at the left and right edge of the main container, `1px` wide at low opacity, and small squares on section corners or intersections. The lines come from `::before` and `::after` pseudo-elements on a `.container-lines` shell and sit behind content via `z-index: -1`. Squares are separate `span` elements inside `.corner-squares`, sized by a variable.

You get CSS tokens (`--container-max`, `--container-pad`, `--line-color`, `--line-strong`, `--corner-size`), ready style blocks for lines and corners, section markup, and a `.content-container` wrapper that shares the guide width. Keep container max-width and padding identical for content and lines, or they drift apart. The skill suggests corner squares between `4px` and `8px` and a consistent line width across sections.

Guides belong at page or major-section level, not on every nested component. `pointer-events: none` is not optional: without it the lines swallow clicks, hovers and text selection. Bright accent colors are discouraged unless the whole visual system is technical. On mobile, check that padding between the line and the text still holds up.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MengTo/Skills --skill container-lines -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/container-lines/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/container-lines/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MengTo/Skills --skill container-lines -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/container-lines/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MengTo/Skills --skill container-lines -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/container-lines/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install MengTo/Skills container-lines
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/container-lines/SKILL.md`

## When to use it
- show the content container edges on a layout
- add structural tension to a loose section
- mark section corners with mini squares
- align guides with the container edges
- build a quiet technical frame without decoration

## Example prompts
- add container lines to the landing page
- put mini corner squares on the product section
- draw vertical guides at the container edges, max width 1120px

# Container Lines

## Use When
- A page needs subtle vertical guides that reveal the content container width.
- A hero, section, or product page feels too loose and needs structural tension.
- The design calls for mini corner squares, measured edges, or quiet technical framing.

## Rules
1. Draw lines at the left and right edges of the main content container.
2. Keep lines thin: `1px` with low opacity.
3. Add mini squares at container corners or section intersections.
4. Keep the line system consistent across sections; do not change width per section.
5. Place lines behind content but above the page background.
6. Disable pointer events so the guides never block UI.

## Base Tokens

```css
:root {
  --container-max: 1120px;
  --container-pad: clamp(20px, 4vw, 48px);
  --line-color: rgba(24, 24, 27, 0.14);
  --line-strong: rgba(24, 24, 27, 0.28);
  --corner-size: 6px;
}
```

## Page Container Lines
Use pseudo-elements on the layout shell.

```css
.container-lines {
  position: relative;
  isolation: isolate;
}
.container-lines::before,
.container-lines::after {
  content: "";
  position: absolute;
  top: 0;
  bottom: 0;
  z-index: -1;
  width: 1px;
  background: var(--line-color);
  pointer-events: none;
}
.container-lines::before {
  left: max(var(--container-pad), calc((100vw - var(--container-max)) / 2));
}
.container-lines::after {
  right: max(var(--container-pad), calc((100vw - var(--container-max)) / 2));
}
```

## Corner Squares
Add four small squares to sections that need a precise measured feel.

```css
.corner-squares {
  position: relative;
}
.corner-squares > .corner {
  position: absolute;
  width: var(--corner-size);
  height: var(--corner-size);
  background: var(--line-strong);
  pointer-events: none;
}
.corner.top-left { top: 0; left: 0; transform: translate(-50%, -50%); }
.corner.top-right { top: 0; right: 0; transform: translate(50%, -50%); }
.corner.bottom-left { bottom: 0; left: 0; transform: translate(-50%, 50%); }
.corner.bottom-right { right: 0; bottom: 0; transform: translate(50%, 50%); }
```

```html
<main class="container-lines">
  <section class="corner-squares">
    <span class="corner top-left"></span>
    <span class="corner top-right"></span>
    <span class="corner bottom-left"></span>
    <span class="corner bottom-right"></span>
    ...
  </section>
</main>
```
