# connector-tmdb

This skill wires The Movie Database into Caffeine projects written in Motoko through the tmdb-client package. Load it when the app reads movies, TV shows or people data.

## What it does

The skill spells out the supported path: the `tmdb-client` mops package, generated from TMDb's OpenAPI spec. It carries 124 operations in one module, `Apis/DefaultApi`, and 111 of them work. Hand-rolling calls to `api.themoviedb.org` with `ic.http_request` is called out as forbidden, because that route skips the non-replicated-outcall safeguard, the generated decoding of roughly 720 response models and the credential handling.

Read the boundaries before you plan features. Twelve operations carry a request body and go out double-wrapped, and `movieRecommendations` throws on every successful response. So keep favorites, ratings and watchlists out of scope until the generator is fixed. For a "more like this" row, use `tvSeriesRecommendations` instead.

For auth the client takes a v4 read-access token in the `?#bearer` variant only. A v3 key of 32 hex characters cannot be sent, and the `?#apiKey` variant emits a header without the `Bearer` prefix and gets a 401. The v4 token never expires, so there is no OAuth flow to build. In a real app keep it in actor state: declare the field without an initializer (`var tmdbToken : Text;`) or the compiler raises `M0250`, gate the setter with `MixinAuthorization`, and never return the token from a query method.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add caffeinelabs/skills --skill connector-tmdb -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/connector-tmdb/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/connector-tmdb/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add caffeinelabs/skills --skill connector-tmdb -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/connector-tmdb/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add caffeinelabs/skills --skill connector-tmdb -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/connector-tmdb/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install caffeinelabs/skills connector-tmdb
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/connector-tmdb/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add caffeinelabs/skills --skill connector-tmdb -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/caffeinelabs/skills --path skills/connector-tmdb
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/connector-tmdb/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add caffeinelabs/skills --skill connector-tmdb -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/caffeinelabs/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/connector-tmdb/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- search movies by title and hand the frontend a narrow record
- build a now-playing or popular row from the TMDb catalog
- turn a relative poster path into a full image URL
- collapse optional response fields into one type so the UI skips null checks
- connect TMDb to a Motoko actor without writing HTTP calls by hand

## Example prompts
- add tmdb-client and build movie search by title
- wire a popular-movies row from TMDb into our Caffeine actor
- we need a similar-titles row — use tvSeriesRecommendations

# Movie and TV data with `tmdb-client`

Motoko bindings for [The Movie Database API](https://developer.themoviedb.org/),
generated from TMDb's OpenAPI spec. **124 operations in one module**
(`Apis/DefaultApi`) — the spec carries no tags, so there is nothing to split on
and no nested facade.

**Read this before planning the app: the read surface works, the write surface
does not.** Of the 124 operations, **111 are usable** and **13 are broken**:

- **12** carry a request body — 11 of the 12 POSTs plus `authenticationDeleteSession`
  — and go out double-wrapped (§6).
- **1** read, `movieRecommendations`, throws on every successful response (§6).

Plan features around catalog reads (search, details, trending, discover,
now-playing) and keep favorites, ratings and watchlists out of scope unless you
are prepared to fix the generator first. Use `tvSeriesRecommendations` if you
need a "more like this" row; its movie counterpart is the broken one.

# Backend

## 1. Add the dependency

```bash
mops add tmdb-client@0.2.0
```

## 2. The credential

**Use the v4 read-access token and `?#bearer`. That is the only credential
this client supports.**

```mo:tmdb-client
auth = ?#bearer "eyJhbGciOi…"   // v4 read-access token, themoviedb.org/settings/api
```

TMDb also issues a v3 API key (32 hex chars) that normally travels as an
