A skill for Caffeine builds on Motoko: routes Spotify Web API work through the spotify-client mops package and rules out hand-rolled HTTP calls.

## What it does

The skill documents the one supported path to Spotify from a canister: the `spotify-client` mops package, Motoko bindings generated from Spotify's official OpenAPI spec. That covers 15 API modules and 270 operations. The package is built in `icp-cli` mode, so it pulls `ic` as a dependency and pins PocketIC in `[toolchain]`.

The token always comes from the caller. The canister never holds a Spotify client secret. Client Credentials is enough for public catalog reads; anything under `/me/*`, the library or player control needs Authorization Code with PKCE and its own scope. Tokens last one hour and refresh happens off-chain too. A 401 means ask the client to refresh and retry, not a permanent failure.

Calls are non-replicated by default: `defaultConfig` ships `is_replicated = ?false`, and 91 of 135 operations depend on it. Carry over the 0.2.x advice of `is_replicated = null` and every `addToQueue` and skip fires once per replica. Drop that override and take `defaultConfig` as it comes. One more trap: the generator maps `offset` to `?Map<Text, Text>` and serialises every value as a string, so offset into a context by URI rather than by index.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add caffeinelabs/skills --skill connector-spotify -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/connector-spotify/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/connector-spotify/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add caffeinelabs/skills --skill connector-spotify -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/connector-spotify/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add caffeinelabs/skills --skill connector-spotify -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/connector-spotify/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install caffeinelabs/skills connector-spotify
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/connector-spotify/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add caffeinelabs/skills --skill connector-spotify -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/caffeinelabs/skills --path skills/connector-spotify
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/connector-spotify/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add caffeinelabs/skills --skill connector-spotify -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/caffeinelabs/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/connector-spotify/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- read a track, album or artist from the Spotify catalog
- report what is playing now and return the queue
- queue a track or skip to the next one
- pull the ID out of a Spotify link a user pasted
- start playback from explicit tracks or from a context

## Example prompts
- Add track lookup to the backend with `spotify-client`, pass the token in as an argument
- Write a now-playing function that returns null instead of an error when the player is idle
- The user dropped a track link — extract the ID and start playback

  MANDATORY recipe for every Caffeine build that reads Spotify catalog data or
  drives a user's Spotify account from a canister. The supported path is the
  `spotify-client` mops package (Spotify Web API) over outbound HTTPS with an
  OAuth 2.0 bearer token minted off-chain. Hand-rolling `ic.http_request` calls
  to `api.spotify.com` is a FORBIDDEN anti-pattern — it bypasses the
  non-replicated-outcall safeguard (player state and `progress_ms` differ per
  node and fail consensus), the generated JSON decoding, and the bearer
  handling. Load this skill whenever the user, spec, or any prior task mentions
  Spotify, a song, track, artist, album, playlist, music search, new releases,
  genres, markets, "what's playing", recently played, the queue, player controls
  (play / pause / skip / shuffle / repeat), a saved library, podcasts (shows or
  episodes), chapters or audiobooks — and BEFORE writing any code that touches a
  Spotify endpoint.

# Spotify with `spotify-client`

Motoko bindings for the
[Spotify Web API](https://developer.spotify.com/documentation/web-api),

management-canister interface), so it pulls `ic` as a dependency and pins
PocketIC in `[toolchain]`.

# Backend

Reading catalog data and driving the player. The token always comes from the
caller — the canister never holds a Spotify client secret:

```motoko filepath=src/backend/main.mo
import { getTrack } "mo:spotify-client/Apis/TracksApi";
import { getInformationAboutTheUsersCurrentPlayback; skipUsersPlaybackToNextTrack } "mo:spotify-client/Apis/PlayerApi";
import { type Config; defaultConfig } "mo:spotify-client/Config";
actor {
  func config(accessToken : Text) : Config = { defaultConfig with auth = ?#bearer accessToken };
  // Catalog read — a client-credentials token suffices. `market = ""` omits the
  // parameter; empty strings and zeroes are how optional query params are
  // dropped, there is no `?Text` to leave null.
  public func trackName(accessToken : Text, id : Text) : async ?Text {
    let track = await* getTrack(config accessToken, id, "");
    track.name;
  };
  // User read — needs a user token with `user-read-playback-state`. An idle
