## What it does

A guardrail in Celigo is a safety and compliance check applied to data flowing through an integration. This skill covers creating and editing them: PII detection, content moderation, and custom AI rules. Guardrails are stored as imports with `adaptorType: "GuardrailImport"` and reached through the `/v1/imports` API, though the Celigo UI gives them a page of their own.

There are three types. `pii` scans for entity types such as email addresses, SSNs, card numbers and phones, and can return a redacted copy of the record when `pii.mask: true` — masking is not automatic. `moderation` checks content against categories like hate speech, violence or harassment. `ai_agent` runs data through a model against your instructions; its `tools` array has to stay empty, otherwise the save fails with 422 `guardrail_tools_not_allowed`. Sensitivity comes from `confidenceThreshold`, 0 to 1, default 0.7: lower values catch more and raise false positives.

Know this before you design one: a guardrail renders a verdict (`flagged: true|false`) and does nothing else to the record. Blocking, routing to review or dropping is the parent's job — a flow, an API endpoint or a Tool. Nothing the guardrail returns reaches downstream steps unless the parent authors a response mapping. A `_connectionId` is only needed for BYOK on the `ai_agent` type; without it, built-in providers run only the models the platform hosts.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add celigo/ai --skill configuring-guardrails -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/configuring-guardrails/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/configuring-guardrails/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add celigo/ai --skill configuring-guardrails -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/configuring-guardrails/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add celigo/ai --skill configuring-guardrails -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/configuring-guardrails/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install celigo/ai configuring-guardrails
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/configuring-guardrails/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add celigo/ai --skill configuring-guardrails -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/celigo/ai --path skills/configuring-guardrails
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/configuring-guardrails/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add celigo/ai --skill configuring-guardrails -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/celigo/ai/tree/HEAD/skills/configuring-guardrails/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- catch personal data in records before they hit downstream systems
- mask emails and card numbers in an integration response
- screen content against harmful categories
- turn a business rule written in plain language into an AI check
- tune the confidence threshold to cut false flags

## Example prompts
- create a pii guardrail that scans for emails and card numbers
- add content moderation with the violence and harassment categories
- set up an ai_agent guardrail that checks the order total

# Configuring Guardrails

A guardrail is a **safety and compliance check** applied to data flowing through a Celigo integration. Guardrails are stored as imports with `adaptorType: "GuardrailImport"` and accessed via the `/v1/imports` API, but they have a dedicated page in the Celigo UI.

Guardrails handle three concerns:

- **Data validation** -- check records against rules before they reach downstream systems (PII detection, content moderation, or custom AI-based evaluation)
- **Confidence tuning** -- control sensitivity via `confidenceThreshold` (0 to 1, default 0.7). Lower values catch more issues but increase false positives
- **PII masking** -- optionally return a redacted copy of the record (`pii.mask: true`) under a `masked` response field. Masking is NOT automatic -- see [PII: mask vs flag](#pii-mask-vs-flag)

No `_connectionId` is required unless using BYOK credentials for the `ai_agent` type. Platform-managed credentials cover most use cases.

Guardrails are used across flows, APIs, and tools.

**Guardrail or AI agent step?** Pick by what the LLM produces. A guardrail renders a **verdict** (`flagged: true|false`) that the parent's routing branches on -- reach for it when the user says "verify / check / validate / flag / screen". An AI agent step does **work** whose output flows onward as data -- reach for it when the user says "classify / extract / generate / summarize / decide"; build that in [configuring-ai-agents](../configuring-ai-agents/SKILL.md).
