## What it does

In Celigo a filter is a gate for records. It decides what passes a point in the pipeline, and the outcome depends on where it sits. An export filter drops non-matching records from the flow without a word; a lookup or import filter only skips that one step for them.

The skill covers the four places filters live: `filter` on an export, `inputFilter` on a lookup export, `filter` on an import, and `inputFilter` on a router branch under `routers[].branches[]`. Each has its own behaviour. It also walks through the expression-versus-script choice — expressions are simpler and need no separate resource, while scripts handle loops, multi-step conditionals and external calls.

Expressions use prefix S-expressions. Field access goes through `extract`, configuration values through `settings`, and every `extract` must sit inside a type coercion: `number`, `string`, `boolean` or `epochtime`. A bare `["extract", ...]` is refused with a 422 both on save and in the filter processor. Operator names are case-insensitive, but the list is closed — `notcontains`, `notmatches` and the like do not exist, so negation goes through `not`. Worth checking before you start debugging a flow.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add celigo/ai --skill configuring-filters -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/configuring-filters/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/configuring-filters/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add celigo/ai --skill configuring-filters -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/configuring-filters/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add celigo/ai --skill configuring-filters -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/configuring-filters/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install celigo/ai configuring-filters
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/configuring-filters/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add celigo/ai --skill configuring-filters -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/celigo/ai --path skills/configuring-filters
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/configuring-filters/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add celigo/ai --skill configuring-filters -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/celigo/ai/tree/HEAD/skills/configuring-filters/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- drop source records by field value on an export
- skip lookup API calls for records missing required fields
- skip an import for records that should not be written
- route records to different branches by field value
- pick between an expression and a script for complex logic

## Example prompts
- Set an output filter on the export so only records with a non-empty email continue
- Add an inputFilter to the router branch: active status to the first, everything else to the second
- Figure out why the filter fails with 422 Invalid operation

# Configuring Filters

A filter is a **record gate** that decides which records pass a point in the pipeline. What happens to the rest depends on where it sits: an export's filter silently drops them from the flow, while a lookup's or an import's filter only skips that step for them. Filters are configured directly on exports, imports, and flow router branches -- not as standalone resources.

Concerns when configuring a filter:

- **Placement** -- where in the pipeline the filter runs (output filter on export, input filter on lookup, pre-import filter, branch routing condition)
- **Mechanism** -- expression-based rules (declarative, no code) vs. script-based (full JavaScript control)
- **Expression syntax** -- prefix-notation S-expressions with operators, field access (`extract`), type coercions, and logical combinators (`and`/`or`/`not`)
- **Settings references** -- dynamic filter values pulled from flow, export, import, or integration settings via `settings` accessor
- **Script alternative** -- when expression rules cannot handle the logic (loops, multi-step conditionals, external lookups), use a filter script instead. Dates relative to now and arithmetic across fields don't need one ([Dates and Computed Values](#dates-and-computed-values))

## Four Places Filters Appear

### Output filter (export `filter`)

Applied after records are retrieved from the source system. Records that match continue through the flow; records that do not match are silently dropped. Available on all export types.

### Input filter (lookup export `inputFilter`)

Applied to incoming records before they trigger a lookup API call. Records that do not match skip the lookup step entirely -- they pass through without enrichment. This reduces unnecessary API calls. Only relevant when `isLookup: true`.

### Import filter (import `filter`)
