This skill writes the JSON config for a dbt MCP server, sorts out authentication, and checks that the connection actually works.

## What it does

The skill walks through dbt MCP server setup: it asks whether you want the local or remote server, which client you use (Claude Desktop, Claude, Cursor, VS Code), and what you plan to do with it. You get a ready `mcpServers` block for your config. The local server runs through `uvx dbt-mcp` and supports dbt CLI commands; the remote one talks HTTP to the dbt platform and has no CLI commands.

Config templates cover the common cases: CLI only, platform plus CLI with OAuth, the same with token auth, a `.env` file variant, and the remote server with authorization headers. A table lists which tool categories are on by default and which are off — SQL and Codegen are off and need variables like `DISABLE_SQL=false`. The skill also pushes credential hygiene: reference tokens as `${DBT_TOKEN}`, keep `.env` in `.gitignore`, never echo token values into terminal output.

Local setup needs `uv`, a dbt project, and the `DBT_PROJECT_DIR` and `DBT_PATH` paths. Remote setup needs a dbt Cloud account with AI features on, a production environment ID, and a token. If you work in dbt Cloud without a local project, skip the local server — otherwise you will hunt for `dbt_project.yml` paths for nothing.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dbt-labs/dbt-agent-skills --skill configuring-dbt-mcp-server -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/configuring-dbt-mcp-server/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/configuring-dbt-mcp-server/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dbt-labs/dbt-agent-skills --skill configuring-dbt-mcp-server -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/configuring-dbt-mcp-server/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dbt-labs/dbt-agent-skills --skill configuring-dbt-mcp-server -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/configuring-dbt-mcp-server/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dbt-labs/dbt-agent-skills configuring-dbt-mcp-server
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/configuring-dbt-mcp-server/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dbt-labs/dbt-agent-skills --skill configuring-dbt-mcp-server -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dbt-labs/dbt-agent-skills --path skills/dbt/skills/configuring-dbt-mcp-server
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/configuring-dbt-mcp-server/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dbt-labs/dbt-agent-skills --skill configuring-dbt-mcp-server -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/dbt-labs/dbt-agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/dbt/skills/configuring-dbt-mcp-server/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- generate a dbt MCP server JSON config for your client
- pick between the local server and the remote HTTP endpoint
- set up OAuth or token auth for the dbt platform
- turn individual tool categories on or off
- verify the MCP server responds after setup

## Example prompts
- set up the dbt MCP server for Cursor, local variant with CLI
- generate a dbt MCP config with token auth and a .env file
- check that my dbt MCP server connects

# Configure dbt MCP Server

## Overview

The dbt MCP server connects AI tools to dbt's CLI, Semantic Layer, Discovery API, and Admin API. This skill guides users through setup with the correct configuration for their use case.

## Questions to Ask

### 1. Server Type
**Ask:** "Do you want to use the **local** or **remote** dbt MCP server?"

| Local Server                                                                                                                                             | Remote Server                                               |
| -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------- |
| Runs on your machine via `uvx` | Connects via HTTP to dbt platform |
| Required for development (authoring models, tests, docs) but can also connect to the dbt platform for consumption (querying metrics, exploring metadata) | Best for consumption (querying metrics, exploring metadata) |
