# configure-site

A Claude skill that builds and maintains a GitBook documentation site: structure, repo, API calls, branding. Handy when docs need to go up from scratch or be reorganized.

## What it does

The skill handles everything around the pages. It designs structure from your source content, scaffolds a Git monorepo with one directory per space, sets up the GitHub or GitLab remote, and creates the site, sections and spaces through the GitBook API. Writing page content is left to the companion `write-docs` skill, which this one calls when it needs text.

GitBook can be driven two ways. With GitBook MCP tools connected, the skill prefers them: `claude mcp add --transport http gitbook-mcp https://mcp.gitbook.com/mcp`, then `/mcp` to finish OAuth sign-in. Otherwise it falls back to the REST API at `https://api.gitbook.com/v1`, which needs `GITBOOK_TOKEN` — a personal token from https://app.gitbook.com/account/developer — as a bearer header on every request. The skill asks you not to write the token to a file or commit it.

One step stays manual. Connecting Git Sync — authorizing GitHub or GitLab, picking the repository and branch, choosing the first sync direction — happens only in the GitBook interface. The skill writes copy-paste instructions for it, and you walk through them once. Site-level Git Sync is the recommended shape: one repo and one branch for the whole site, with `gitbook-docs.yaml` mapping each space to its own directory. Per-space sync is worth it only when a space needs a separate repo or branch. If you skip Git Sync entirely, content import and templates are the fallback.

## Requirements
- Works with: GitHub, GitLab

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add GitbookIO/gitbook-skills --skill configure-site -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/configure-site/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/configure-site/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add GitbookIO/gitbook-skills --skill configure-site -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/configure-site/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add GitbookIO/gitbook-skills --skill configure-site -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/configure-site/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install GitbookIO/gitbook-skills configure-site
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/configure-site/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add GitbookIO/gitbook-skills --skill configure-site -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/GitbookIO/gitbook-skills --path skills/configure-site
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/configure-site/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add GitbookIO/gitbook-skills --skill configure-site -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/GitbookIO/gitbook-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/configure-site/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- design a docs site structure from existing content
- scaffold a monorepo with a directory per space
- create a site, sections and spaces via the GitBook API
- apply logo, colors, fonts, header and footer
- hand off clear instructions for the Git Sync UI step

## Example prompts
- Build a GitBook docs site from the material in `docs/` and propose a structure
- Lay out the spaces as monorepo directories and prepare `gitbook-docs.yaml`
- Change the logo and colors of my GitBook site through the API

Prefer site-level Git Sync (gitbook-docs.yaml mapping every space) over per-space sync unless a space needs its own repo or branch. Use when spinning up a new docs site, restructuring or extending one, linking a site or spaces to Git, changing branding (logo, colors, fonts, header/footer), or programmatically managing spaces, sections, or site-spaces. Defers page authoring to the companion `write-docs` skill."

# Configure GitBook Site

A skill for creating and maintaining entire GitBook documentation sites. Where `write-docs` covers what goes inside a single page, this skill covers everything around the pages: structure design, repo scaffolding, the GitBook API, and branding. Use the two skills together — this one calls into `write-docs` whenever it needs to generate or edit page content.

## How you can talk to GitBook

There's more than one way to drive GitBook — GitBook's MCP server and the REST API. Check what's actually available in the current session and prefer **MCP first**: if GitBook MCP tools are already connected, use them for anything they cover (creating/configuring sites, opening change requests, drafting and editing content, restructuring docs) instead of making direct API calls. Don't run a detection script for this — you already know your own available tools/MCP connections; just use that awareness.
