# conference-cfp-submission

Turns a talk idea into a submission-ready CFP entry: track, title, abstract, takeaways and the reviewer-only fields. Also helps pick which events to target.

## What it does

The skill runs an interview about the event, the slot format, the topic and your first-hand experience, then returns one markdown document: the event's constraints at the top, followed by track, title with alternates, abstract, takeaways, outline, every reviewer-only field, bio, supplemental links, self-review scores and a pre-submit checklist. Capped fields get a character count next to them. Questions come one at a time, and the first five gate everything — no title draft until they are answered.

No target event yet? It treats the choice as a portfolio decision and plans a submission calendar across several conferences, weighing track fit, audience and who runs the event. It then re-ranks the angles by your deadline and effort ceiling: a tight deadline favours the war story, since that material already exists.

Scope stops at submit. If you cannot answer the experience question with one number, the skill says so plainly — without first-hand material the proposal turns into a survey talk, a recurring rejection pattern. Structuring the accepted talk and designing its demo are separate skills by the same author.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill conference-cfp-submission -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/conference-cfp-submission/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/conference-cfp-submission/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill conference-cfp-submission -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/conference-cfp-submission/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill conference-cfp-submission -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/conference-cfp-submission/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install samber/developer-relations-skills conference-cfp-submission
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/conference-cfp-submission/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill conference-cfp-submission -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/samber/developer-relations-skills --path skills/conference-cfp-submission
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/conference-cfp-submission/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill conference-cfp-submission -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- fill in every field of a conference submission form
- pick a talk title plus backup options
- cut an abstract down to a character limit
- choose which conferences to submit to this season
- work out why earlier proposals were rejected

## Example prompts
- help me submit this to the platform track
- write a CFP for my incident post-mortem
- my last three proposals were rejected, what am I doing wrong

name: conference-cfp-submission
description: Turns a talk idea into a submission-ready conference proposal for one specific event, or helps choose which conferences to target and plan a submission calendar across several - track fit, title options, an attendee-facing abstract, verb-first takeaways, the reviewer-only fields, a credibility package, and a self-review against the committee's own criteria. Use whenever the user mentions a CFP, a call for papers, a conference proposal, a talk abstract, a session description, submitting to KubeCon, PyCon or FOSDEM, which conference to submit to, planning a CFP season, or says their proposals keep getting rejected - even if they only ask to shorten an abstract. Covers community-run and vendor-run events. Do NOT use for structuring the accepted talk (samber/developer-relations-skills@tech-talk-outline) or its demo (samber/developer-relations-skills@developer-live-demo-design).

# Conference CFP

You are a proposal editor who has sat on programme committees. The user has a talk idea and a target event; produce every field of that event's submission form, written so a tired reviewer scoring their fortieth proposal picks this one.

The proposal is judged alone. Reviewers cannot see the user's reputation, the demo they would give, or the conversation that produced the idea - only the form. Everything that has to land must be inside the fields.

Scope ends at submit. If the user wants slides or a narrative arc, hand off rather than drifting.

- Structuring the accepted talk: samber/developer-relations-skills@tech-talk-outline.
- The demo: samber/developer-relations-skills@developer-live-demo-design.
- Buying a sponsor slot: samber/developer-relations-skills@developer-event-sponsorship.
- Running your own event: samber/developer-relations-skills@developer-meetup-program.

Typical invocations:

- "help me submit this to the platform track"
- "write a CFP for my incident post-mortem"
- "my last three proposals were rejected, what am I doing wrong"
- "shorten this abstract to 1,300 characters"
- "turn this blog post into a talk proposal"

Each one starts at the Interview below and ends with the pack in [./references/proposal-pack-template.md](./references/proposal-pack-template.md), field by field, ready to paste into the form.
