## What it does

The skill walks the agent through five stages of external recon. First, domain and DNS enumeration: reverse WHOIS, passive subdomain discovery with `amass` and `subfinder`, `crt.sh` queries, SPF, DKIM and DMARC checks, plus a zone transfer attempt. Then infrastructure: Shodan, Censys, cloud bucket hunting, WAF and CDN detection, archived pages from the Wayback Machine.

Stage three covers people and email: `theHarvester`, address format lookup via `hunter.io`, LinkedIn profiles, org charts, job postings and employee social media. Stage four hunts leaks: `haveibeenpwned.com`, paste sites, secret scanning in GitHub and GitLab with `trufflehog` and `gitleaks`, document metadata via `exiftool`, Google dorks. Stage five profiles the stack with `whatweb`, `sslyze` and `testssl.sh`.

It only runs against a target you have written authorization for. Amass, theHarvester, Shodan CLI, Recon-ng and SpiderFoot must be installed, and API keys for Shodan, Censys, SecurityTrails, Hunter.io, VirusTotal and GitHub are needed — without them several sources return nothing. The author also states that stalking or surveillance of individuals falls outside an authorized engagement, and recommends routing queries through a VPN or Tor.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill conducting-external-reconnaissance-with-osint -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/conducting-external-reconnaissance-with-osint/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/conducting-external-reconnaissance-with-osint/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill conducting-external-reconnaissance-with-osint -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/conducting-external-reconnaissance-with-osint/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill conducting-external-reconnaissance-with-osint -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/conducting-external-reconnaissance-with-osint/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills conducting-external-reconnaissance-with-osint
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/conducting-external-reconnaissance-with-osint/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill conducting-external-reconnaissance-with-osint -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --path skills/conducting-external-reconnaissance-with-osint
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/conducting-external-reconnaissance-with-osint/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mukul975/Anthropic-Cybersecurity-Skills --skill conducting-external-reconnaissance-with-osint -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- enumerate a target's subdomains from passive sources
- find the employee email format for a phishing campaign
- check whether API keys leaked into public repositories
- pull usernames and software versions out of document metadata
- identify the WAF and CDN hiding the origin server

## Example prompts
- run external OSINT recon on target.com, start with DNS and subdomains
- collect employee emails and the org chart for target.com
- search the org's public repos for leaked secrets

# Conducting External Reconnaissance with OSINT

## When to Use

- Performing the initial reconnaissance phase of a penetration test to gather intelligence before active scanning
- Mapping an organization's external attack surface to identify unknown or shadow IT assets
- Collecting employee information, email formats, and organizational structure for social engineering campaigns
- Identifying exposed credentials, leaked data, or sensitive documents published on the internet
- Scoping the breadth of an organization's digital footprint prior to a red team engagement

**Do not use** for stalking, harassment, or unauthorized surveillance of individuals. OSINT gathering must be conducted within the scope of an authorized engagement and comply with applicable privacy laws (GDPR, CCPA).

## Prerequisites

- Written authorization to perform reconnaissance against the target organization
- Dedicated research workstation with a VPN or Tor for anonymized queries when required
