## What it does

The skill walks the agent through stages: header structure first, then raw inputs, then formulas for margins and multiples, and statistics last. Every derived figure is a formula pointing at an input cell rather than a pasted number. Change revenue or share price and the whole sheet recalculates.

Data sources follow a fixed order. If S&P Kensho, FactSet or Daloopa MCP servers are connected, the skill uses them and nothing else. Web search is not treated as a primary source, because it lacks the audit trail this kind of analysis needs. Without those MCPs it falls back to Bloomberg Terminal and SEC EDGAR filings.

An example workbook sits at `examples/comps_example.xlsx`; it shows the expected depth and how sections flow, though copying its layout verbatim is discouraged. The skill asks about audience and the key question before picking metrics. Private companies with no public peers, diversified conglomerates and pre-revenue startups are a poor fit.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/financial-services --skill comps-analysis -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/comps-analysis/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/comps-analysis/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/financial-services --skill comps-analysis -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/comps-analysis/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/financial-services --skill comps-analysis -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/comps-analysis/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install anthropics/financial-services comps-analysis
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/comps-analysis/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/financial-services --skill comps-analysis -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/anthropics/financial-services --path plugins/agent-plugins/market-researcher/skills/comps-analysis
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/comps-analysis/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/financial-services --skill comps-analysis -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- build a peer comparison table for a public company valuation
- calculate valuation multiples across a group of comparables
- spot over- or under-valued names against sector peers
- prepare supporting material for an investment committee
- produce a sector overview with metric benchmarking

## Example prompts
- Build a comparable company analysis for three public cloud software names, pull the data from FactSet MCP
- Put together a valuation multiples table for the peer set and flag the outliers
- Create a sector overview with operating metrics and statistics across the comps

  Build institutional-grade comparable company analyses with operating metrics, valuation multiples, and statistical benchmarking in Excel/spreadsheet format.

  **Perfect for:**
  - Public company valuation (M&A, investment analysis)
  - Benchmarking performance vs. industry peers
  - Pricing IPOs or funding rounds
  - Identifying valuation outliers (over/under-valued)
  - Supporting investment committee presentations
  - Creating sector overview reports

  **Not ideal for:**
  - Private companies without comparable public peers
  - Highly diversified conglomerates
  - Distressed/bankrupt companies
  - Pre-revenue startups
  - Companies with unique business models

# Comparable Company Analysis

## ⚠️ CRITICAL: Data Source Priority (READ FIRST)

**ALWAYS follow this data source hierarchy:**

1. **FIRST: Check for MCP data sources** - If S&P Kensho MCP, FactSet MCP, or Daloopa MCP are available, use them exclusively for financial and trading information
2. **DO NOT use web search** if the above MCP data sources are available
3. **ONLY if MCPs are unavailable:** Then use Bloomberg Terminal, SEC EDGAR filings, or other institutional sources
4. **NEVER use web search as a primary data source** - it lacks the accuracy, audit trails, and reliability required for institutional-grade analysis

**Why this matters:** MCP sources provide verified, institutional-grade data with proper citations. Web search results can be outdated, inaccurate, or unreliable for financial analysis.

## Overview
This skill teaches Claude to build institutional-grade comparable company analyses that combine operating metrics, valuation multiples, and statistical benchmarking. The output is a structured Excel/spreadsheet that enables informed investment decisions through peer comparison.

**Reference Material & Contextualization:**

An example comparable company analysis is provided in `examples/comps_example.xlsx`. When using this or other example files in this skill directory, use them intelligently:

**DO use examples for:**
- Understanding structural hierarchy (how sections flow)
- Grasping the level of rigor expected (statistical depth, documentation standards)
- Learning principles (clear headers, transparent formulas, audit trails)

**DO NOT use examples for:**
- Exact reproduction of format or metrics
- Copying layout without considering context
- Applying the same visual style regardless of audience
