# component-canvas

Builds a full-screen canvas where your project's components show up as they actually behave, with pan, zoom and variant comparisons. Useful when you need the whole design system in one view.

## What it does

The skill wraps existing components and never edits them. No changes to source, exports, styles, hooks or behavior, and components must not import canvas code or depend on it. That rule is where most integrations break.

Before building, the agent reads repository conventions, routes, component public APIs and design tokens, then works in stages: one route with a single group and component first, then the remaining groups with sample data, then variant comparisons and gestures. It asks only about things that change the outcome, such as which components are in scope, whether a new dependency is acceptable, or whether a live service may be previewed. Everything else gets a sensible default, stated in the report.

Variants are compared one prop at a time. In a size comparison only `size` changes while text and `variant` stay put. Portal examples keep their native roots, and each preview is isolated with test data or mock services before it mounts, so production credentials and real data stay out. Without safe isolation the live example is omitted rather than faked.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ibelick/ui-skills --skill component-canvas -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/component-canvas/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/component-canvas/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ibelick/ui-skills --skill component-canvas -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/component-canvas/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ibelick/ui-skills --skill component-canvas -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/component-canvas/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install ibelick/ui-skills component-canvas
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/component-canvas/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ibelick/ui-skills --skill component-canvas -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/ibelick/ui-skills --path skills/component-canvas
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/component-canvas/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ibelick/ui-skills --skill component-canvas -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/ibelick/ui-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/component-canvas/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- see every component in the project on one screen
- compare one button's size and style variants side by side
- test hover, focus and pressed states with real input
- spot a component that drifted from the design system
- show variant coverage to the team without opening Storybook

## Example prompts
- build a canvas with the components in `src/components/ui`
- add a size comparison of the Button variants to the canvas
- show form and navigation groups on the canvas with sample data

# Component canvas

Build a canvas that shows the project's existing components as they really behave. The canvas wraps components. It never changes them.

## Ground rules

- Do not modify component source, exports, styles, hooks, or behavior to make the canvas work. Components must not import or depend on canvas code.
- Do not patch libraries, browser APIs, rendered component DOM, or portal roots.
- Show only the components the user asked for. Adding components, installing dependencies, changing a component's design, or making the canvas public requires permission first.
- Keep existing access controls.
- Leave unrelated work alone. If removing an earlier canvas integration, undo only its changes to components.
- Follow any restrictions on commands, browser access, dependencies, and edits.

## Before building

Read the repository conventions, routes, component public APIs, design tokens, and test setup. Use the existing framework and libraries.

Ask the user only when the answer changes what gets built or touches shared code: which components are in scope, whether a new dependency is acceptable, or whether a live service may be previewed. For everything else, choose a sensible default, state it in the report, and proceed.

## Build order

1. Add a minimal canvas route or entry point with one group and one component. Confirm it works.
2. Add the remaining groups with sample data.
3. Add variant comparisons, then advanced gestures and persistence, one feature at a time.

Keep canvas code in one place. Check imports and package exports when moving files. Follow the project's language, validation, and test conventions. Do not add architectural layers or directory names the project does not already use.

Keep layout and camera logic separate from sample data and component source.

## Layout

- Fill the viewport with a plain background.
- If the project already supports light and dark themes, add an accessible toggle using its existing theme API. Apply the selected theme to the canvas and native portals. If theme support is absent, omit the toggle. Do not invent themes or change component styles.
- Give every group the same padding, radius, and thin dashed border, subtle but visible in both themes. Use an existing muted color at roughly 25% opacity for borders. Place its plain title 8px above the border, using the muted text color without opacity.
