# complete-work

Drives a development task from creating a branch to opening a verified GitHub PR. Handy when you want an agent to handle the entire implementation cycle autonomously.

## What it does

The skill extracts requirements from the prompt or a Linear ticket, fetches the remote default branch, and spawns a branch prefixed with `agent/`. Before modifying any files, it pushes this new branch to GitHub and configures upstream tracking. If instructions contain ambiguities or heavy tradeoffs, it triggers the `$grilling` interview to confirm scope before coding starts.

Changes are committed incrementally at logical checkpoints rather than staged in one bulk commit. For sensitive areas like billing or authentication, the skill demands extra verification beyond happy-path tests. It refuses to open draft PRs. Publication proceeds only when every acceptance criterion passes.

Execution fails immediately if GitHub CLI lacks authentication or if companion skills `create-pr` and `finish-pr` are absent. The workflow also references `test-changes` to format manual verification steps, embedding them directly into a `## Test changes` section inside the PR description.

## Requirements
- Works with: GitHub

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PinguApps/Skills --skill complete-work -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/complete-work/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/complete-work/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PinguApps/Skills --skill complete-work -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/complete-work/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PinguApps/Skills --skill complete-work -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/complete-work/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install PinguApps/Skills complete-work
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/complete-work/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PinguApps/Skills --skill complete-work -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/PinguApps/Skills --path skills/complete-work
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/complete-work/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PinguApps/Skills --skill complete-work -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/PinguApps/Skills/tree/HEAD/skills/complete-work/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- take a Linear ticket through a fresh `agent/` branch to an opened PR
- record incremental git commits during implementation instead of a single bulk commit
- verify remote tracking branches before writing project code
- generate a pull request with explicit manual test handoff instructions

## Example prompts
- Implement the assigned Linear ticket using complete-work
- Run complete-work to add validation to the login route and open a PR
- Use complete-work to refactor session handling and push the pull request

# Complete Work

Take the task supplied with this invocation from a new branch through a verified implementation and a completed PR review cycle.

## 1. Establish scope and create a branch

Recover the requested work and acceptance criteria from the accompanying instructions and conversation. When the supplied work is a Linear issue or ticket, read its full requirements and acceptance criteria, including referenced material needed to establish scope; a title or summary alone is insufficient. Without a Linear ticket, use the complete user request and conversation as the scope. Read applicable `AGENTS.md` files and repository requirements. If no task was supplied, ask for it before creating a branch.

If an issue with performing the task requires decisions from the user—such as material ambiguity, conflicting requirements, unresolved tradeoffs, or implementation risk—invoke `$grilling` and complete its interview before creating the branch or beginning implementation. Proceed only after the user confirms the shared understanding. This is a conditional aid, not a mandatory phase: skip it when the request and acceptance criteria are clear and executable, and handle purely operational blockers through the normal workflow.

Inspect the worktree, current branch, and remotes. Preserve pre-existing changes and exclude unrelated commits from the new branch and PR. Identify the remote for the intended base repository and discover that repository's default branch from GitHub metadata or its remote HEAD (`git ls-remote --symref <base-remote> HEAD`). Fetch the default branch and create a new, descriptively named branch with `--no-track` directly from that freshly fetched commit before editing. The branch name must begin with `agent/`, for example `agent/add-login-validation`; follow repository naming conventions for the suffix and use the discovered default branch as the PR base. Verify that the new branch's initial HEAD matches the fetched default-branch commit; do not branch from a stale local copy of the default branch or the current feature branch. If the remote or default branch is ambiguous, the default branch is missing, or fetching fails, stop and report the blocker. Use an isolated worktree when needed to preserve existing work.
