## What it does

This skill runs competitive research as a workflow: it sets a search plan, selects relevant competitors, gathers only the evidence needed for the stated decision, and labels facts, inferences, and assumptions. The result is a decision-support snapshot with real URL citations, a comparison matrix, and options for what to do next.

Its output follows a stable schema, so later skills can compare a fresh run with an earlier snapshot. It usually covers three or four competitors and records positioning, relevant capabilities, likely strengths, likely weaknesses, and a key source for each one. This is not a market-sizing report or a deep investigation of one company.

Provide a company, product, or segment together with the decision the research should support. Known competitors can be supplied, or the skill can identify them. With no context, it asks up to three questions and proceeds with labeled assumptions. Check those assumptions before acting, because they are part of the evidence boundary.

```bash
npx skills add deanpeters/Product-Manager-Skills --skill competitive-research-snapshot -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/competitive-research-snapshot/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/competitive-research-snapshot/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add deanpeters/Product-Manager-Skills --skill competitive-research-snapshot -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/competitive-research-snapshot/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add deanpeters/Product-Manager-Skills --skill competitive-research-snapshot -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/competitive-research-snapshot/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install deanpeters/Product-Manager-Skills competitive-research-snapshot
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/competitive-research-snapshot/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add deanpeters/Product-Manager-Skills --skill competitive-research-snapshot -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**

gemini skills install https://github.com/deanpeters/Product-Manager-Skills --path skills/competitive-research-snapshot
```
### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)
**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/competitive-research-snapshot/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works
### OpenCode
**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add deanpeters/Product-Manager-Skills --skill competitive-research-snapshot -a opencode
```
### Claude.ai
**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills
## When to use it
- ground a positioning change in cited evidence
- compare where competitors are strong or weak
- create a baseline for later competitive diffs
- surface product risks and opportunities
## Example prompts
- Run `competitive-research-snapshot` on our product and recommend which roadmap direction the evidence supports.
- Use `competitive-research-snapshot` for [Competitor A] and [Competitor B], and identify another relevant competitor if needed.
- Prepare a deal-support snapshot with `competitive-research-snapshot`; compare us with the main rival and separate sourced facts from assumptions.
