## What it does

The skill enforces atomic commits and clean git hygiene. Each commit should isolate a single logical change and stay deployable on its own. The underlying guideline is simple: if you need the word "and" to explain a commit, split it up.

Thresholds keep diffs manageable. A yellow warning triggers when a working tree reaches 5 to 10 files or 250 to 400 changed lines. Crossing 10 files or 400 lines puts the repository in the red zone, requiring an immediate commit. The skill includes inspection commands such as `git diff --shortstat` and provides `scripts/check-commit-size.sh` to automate size checks.

Because `user-invocable` is set to `false`, the assistant consults these guidelines automatically during coding and PR preparation rather than waiting for a direct slash command. This makes it a solid guardrail before you take on the next refactoring step.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alinaqi/maggy --skill commit-hygiene -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/commit-hygiene/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/commit-hygiene/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alinaqi/maggy --skill commit-hygiene -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/commit-hygiene/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alinaqi/maggy --skill commit-hygiene -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/commit-hygiene/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install alinaqi/maggy commit-hygiene
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/commit-hygiene/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alinaqi/maggy --skill commit-hygiene -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/alinaqi/maggy --path skills/commit-hygiene
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/commit-hygiene/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alinaqi/maggy --skill commit-hygiene -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/alinaqi/maggy/tree/HEAD/skills/commit-hygiene/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- split large diffs into atomic commits
- keep pull requests under 400 lines for faster review
- track diff thresholds with `scripts/check-commit-size.sh`
- isolate refactoring changes from new feature logic

## Example prompts
- Inspect my current git diff and advise if it is time to commit
- Split my current uncommitted changes into atomic commits
- Help me separate the refactoring work into its own commit before the feature changes

# Commit Hygiene Skill

**Purpose:** Keep commits atomic, PRs reviewable, and git history clean. Advise when it's time to commit before changes become too large.

## Core Philosophy

```
┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│  ATOMIC COMMITS                                                  │
│  ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────  │
│  One logical change per commit.                                  │
│  Each commit should be self-contained and deployable.            │
│  If you need "and" to describe it, split it.                     │
├─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│  SMALL PRS WIN                                                   │
│  ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────  │
│  < 400 lines changed = reviewed in < 1 hour                      │
│  > 1000 lines = likely rubber-stamped or abandoned               │
│  Smaller PRs = faster reviews, fewer bugs, easier reverts        │
├─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│  COMMIT EARLY, COMMIT OFTEN                                      │
│  ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────  │
│  Working code? Commit it.                                        │
│  Test passing? Commit it.                                        │
│  Don't wait for "done" - commit at every stable point.           │
└─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
## Commit Size Thresholds
### Warning Thresholds (Time to Commit!)
| Metric | Yellow Zone | Red Zone | Action |
|--------|-------------|----------|--------|
| **Files changed** | 5-10 files | > 10 files | Commit NOW |
| **Lines added** | 150-300 lines | > 300 lines | Commit NOW |
| **Lines deleted** | 100-200 lines | > 200 lines | Commit NOW |
