# color-palette-extractor

Pulls dominant colors out of an image, screenshot or website and turns them into a palette with contrast checks. Handy when you need a theme built from a logo or someone else's mockup.

## What it does

The skill takes an image file (PNG, JPG, SVG), a website URL, a screenshot, a design mockup, or an existing color code. From an image it reads pixel data, groups similar shades and sorts them by how much space they take up. From a website it fetches the CSS and picks out brand, accent, text and background colors. Clustering runs through K-means and returns 5-10 dominant colors; near-white and near-black get dropped unless they cover a meaningful area.

Those colors become the primary palette: the most dominant one, two or three supporting colors, one or two accents, a background and a text color. An extended palette adds tints, shades and a 50-950 numeric scale. Harmony analysis covers complementary, analogous, triadic, split-complementary, tetradic and monochromatic schemes.

Accessibility is part of the run, not an afterthought. Every text/background pairing gets a WCAG 2.1 contrast ratio plus a simulation for protanopia, deuteranopia and tritanopia, and failing pairs come back with a suggested alternative. Output goes to HEX, RGB, HSL, Tailwind, CSS variables, SCSS, JSON and iOS/Android snippets — the templates live in `references/export-formats.md`, the report structure in `references/output-template.md`. Colors scraped from a site only cover what the CSS actually exposes, so shades baked into images won't show up.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add OneWave-AI/claude-skills --skill color-palette-extractor -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/color-palette-extractor/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/color-palette-extractor/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add OneWave-AI/claude-skills --skill color-palette-extractor -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/color-palette-extractor/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add OneWave-AI/claude-skills --skill color-palette-extractor -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/color-palette-extractor/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install OneWave-AI/claude-skills color-palette-extractor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/color-palette-extractor/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add OneWave-AI/claude-skills --skill color-palette-extractor -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/OneWave-AI/claude-skills --path color-palette-extractor
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/color-palette-extractor/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add OneWave-AI/claude-skills --skill color-palette-extractor -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/OneWave-AI/claude-skills/tree/HEAD/color-palette-extractor/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pull a palette from a screenshot of someone else's UI
- build a theme around a client's logo
- check whether text passes WCAG 2.1 contrast
- generate a Tailwind config from a set of colors
- build a 50-950 shade scale from one hex code

## Example prompts
- Extract the color palette from this screenshot and list the dominant colors
- Generate a color scheme from this image and check text contrast
- Create a Tailwind config from these colors

# Color Palette Extractor

Extract and generate accessible color palettes from images, websites, and designs.

## Contents

- `references/output-template.md` — full report structure for presenting a palette
- `references/export-formats.md` — CSS, Tailwind, SCSS, JSON, iOS, Android snippets
- `references/color-theory.md` — harmony schemes, accessibility, extraction best practices

## Workflow

1. Identify the source: image file (PNG, JPG, SVG), website URL, screenshot, design mockup, or an existing color code to build from.

2. Extract colors.
   - From an image: analyze pixel data, identify dominant colors, group similar shades, calculate frequency, and sort by prominence.
   - From a website: fetch and parse the CSS, extract color values, and identify brand, accent, text, and background colors.
   - Cluster with K-means; extract 5-10 dominant colors. Ignore near-white and near-black unless significant.

3. Build the primary palette (5-10 colors): most dominant color, 2-3 supporting colors, 1-2 accents, a background, and a text color. Generate an extended palette with tints, shades, tones, and 50-950 numeric scales. See `references/color-theory.md`.

4. Run color harmony analysis to produce complementary, analogous, triadic, split-complementary, tetradic, and monochromatic schemes. See `references/color-theory.md`.

5. Check accessibility: compute WCAG 2.1 contrast ratios for each text/background pairing and test against protanopia, deuteranopia, and tritanopia. Recommend accessible alternatives where a pairing fails. See `references/color-theory.md`.

6. Format the report following `references/output-template.md`, and export to the requested formats using `references/export-formats.md`.
