## What it does

The skill provides rules for designing color schemes that meet WCAG accessibility standards. It guides the agent through calculating relative luminance contrast ratios and adapting graphics for people with color vision deficiency. Reference documents inside cover contrast standards and validation workflows.

For WCAG AA compliance, normal text needs at least a 4.5:1 ratio, while UI elements and large text require 3:1. The stricter AAA standard demands 7:1 for normal text. Mixing over 8 colors is discouraged. Pure red and green pairings are explicitly avoided.

Color must never be the only indicator of system state. Statuses and form validation require explicit labels or icons to stay readable for color-blind users.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill color-accessibility -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/color-accessibility/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/color-accessibility/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill color-accessibility -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/color-accessibility/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill color-accessibility -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/color-accessibility/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts color-accessibility
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/color-accessibility/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill color-accessibility -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --path skills/color-accessibility
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/color-accessibility/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill color-accessibility -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- calculate contrast ratios to satisfy WCAG AA or AAA guidelines
- design form states and indicators without relying solely on color
- adapt charts and visualizations for users with color vision deficiency
- assemble an interface palette without conflicting red-green pairings

## Example prompts
- Check our form colors against WCAG AA contrast guidelines.
- Suggest a chart palette that remains distinct for users with red-green color blindness.
- Update our status badges to include icons and text labels alongside color.

## Overview

Accessible color design ensures all users, including those with color vision deficiency, can access and understand information.

## When to Use

- Creating color palettes
- Designing data visualizations
- Testing interface designs
- Status indicators and alerts
- Form validation states
- Charts and graphs

## Quick Start

Minimal working example:

```yaml
WCAG Contrast Ratios:
WCAG AA (Minimum):
  - Normal text: 4.5:1
  - Large text (18pt+): 3:1
  - UI components & graphical elements: 3:1
  - Focus indicators: 3:1
WCAG AAA (Enhanced):
  - Normal text: 7:1
  - Large text: 4.5:1
  - Better for accessibility
---
Testing Contrast:
Tools:
  - WebAIM Contrast Checker
  - Color Contrast Analyzer
  - Figma plugins
  - Browser DevTools
Formula (WCAG): Contrast = (L1 + 0.05) / (L2 + 0.05)
  Where L = relative luminance
// ... (see reference guides for full implementation)
```

## Reference Guides

## Best Practices

### ✅ DO

- Ensure 4.5:1 contrast minimum (WCAG AA)
- Test with color blindness simulator
- Use patterns or icons with color
- Label states with text, not color alone
- Test with real users with color blindness
- Document color usage in design system
- Choose accessible color palettes
- Use sequential colors for ordered data
- Validate all color combinations
- Include focus indicators

### ❌ DON'T

- Use color alone to convey information
- Create low-contrast text
- Assume users see colors correctly
- Use red-green combinations
- Forget about focus states
- Mix too many colors (>5-8)
- Use pure red and pure green together
- Skip contrast testing
- Assume AA is sufficient (AAA better)
- Ignore color blindness in testing
