## What it does

The skill wires your agent into the CoinGecko API for crypto market data: current prices, OHLC candles, historical charts, exchange volumes, trending tokens and category breakdowns. Coverage runs past 13,000 tokens, with history going back years.

Three reference files ship with it. `references/endpoints.md` lists endpoints with parameters, response schemas and rate limits. `references/id_mapping.md` covers slug-style IDs like `solana` or `usd-coin` and how to map a contract address to one. `references/data_quality.md` goes through historical gaps and free-versus-pro differences. Two scripts do the fetching: `scripts/fetch_market_data.py` pulls top coins, trending tokens and global stats, while `scripts/historical_analysis.py` computes returns, volatility and drawdown. Both support a `--demo` mode.

You need `httpx`, `pandas` and `numpy` installed. The free tier needs no API key and allows 30 calls per minute, so batch jobs need pacing; the examples include exponential backoff on 429 responses. A Pro key goes into `COINGECKO_API_KEY` and switches the base URL to `pro-api.coingecko.com`. Free-tier prices refresh every 1-2 minutes, which is why the authors point you to Birdeye or DexScreener for real-time Solana DEX data and fresh token launches. OHLC granularity is limited to 1/7/14/30/90/180/365-day windows.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add agiprolabs/claude-trading-skills --skill coingecko-api -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/coingecko-api/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/coingecko-api/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add agiprolabs/claude-trading-skills --skill coingecko-api -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/coingecko-api/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add agiprolabs/claude-trading-skills --skill coingecko-api -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/coingecko-api/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install agiprolabs/claude-trading-skills coingecko-api
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/coingecko-api/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add agiprolabs/claude-trading-skills --skill coingecko-api -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/agiprolabs/claude-trading-skills --path skills/coingecko-api
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/coingecko-api/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add agiprolabs/claude-trading-skills --skill coingecko-api -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- compute total market cap and BTC dominance
- pull 90 days of daily candles for a token
- compare exchange volumes and trust scores
- find tokens trending in the last 24 hours
- rank DeFi against L1 and meme coin market caps

## Example prompts
- Show me total crypto market cap and BTC dominance using coingecko-api
- Fetch 30 days of daily OHLC for solana and compute volatility
- What tokens are trending on CoinGecko right now? Use the coingecko-api skill

# CoinGecko API Skill

Query the CoinGecko API for comprehensive crypto market data — prices, historical
charts, exchange volumes, trending tokens, global stats, and category breakdowns.
The free tier requires no API key and supports 30 calls/min.

## When to Use This Skill

- **Macro analysis**: Global market cap, BTC dominance, total volume trends
- **Historical data**: Daily/hourly OHLCV going back years (not minutes-level)
- **Cross-exchange comparisons**: Exchange volume rankings and trust scores
- **Trending/discovery**: What tokens are trending on CoinGecko in the last 24h
- **Category analysis**: Compare DeFi vs L1 vs meme coin market caps
- **Token research**: Full metadata including links, description, community stats

Use **Birdeye** or **DexScreener** instead for real-time Solana DEX data, new token
launches, or sub-daily granularity on Solana tokens.

## Quick Start

### Get Current Prices

```python
import httpx
# No API key needed for free tier
resp = httpx.get(
    "https://api.coingecko.com/api/v3/simple/price",
    params={"ids": "solana,bitcoin,ethereum", "vs_currencies": "usd",
            "include_24hr_change": "true"},
)
data = resp.json()
for coin, info in data.items():
    print(f"{coin}: ${info['usd']:.2f} ({info['usd_24h_change']:+.1f}%)")
```

### Get Top Coins by Market Cap

```python
import httpx
resp = httpx.get(
    "https://api.coingecko.com/api/v3/coins/markets",
    params={"vs_currency": "usd", "order": "market_cap_desc",
            "per_page": 10, "page": 1, "sparkline": "false"},
)
for coin in resp.json():
    print(f"{coin['symbol'].upper():>6}  ${coin['current_price']:>10,.2f}  "
          f"MCap: ${coin['market_cap']/1e9:.1f}B  "
          f"24h: {coin['price_change_percentage_24h']:+.1f}%")
```

### Get Historical Price Data

```python
import httpx
import pandas as pd
resp = httpx.get(
    "https://api.coingecko.com/api/v3/coins/solana/market_chart",
