# cognitive-walkthrough

Runs one user task through the cognitive walkthrough method and shows where a novice gets stuck. Useful before you spend time on usability testing.

## What it does

The skill takes a single task in an interface — completing checkout, uploading a file — and walks it the way a first-time user would. The task gets split into atomic actions, and at each one the agent answers the four cognitive walkthrough questions: will users try to do the right thing, will they notice the control, will they connect it to their goal, and will they see progress afterward.

You supply a task description, a user persona and an interface description. Screenshots or a prototype help a lot, but the walkthrough runs without them. At the end the agent collects failure points, sorts them into blockers, major friction and minor issues, and estimates how many target users would finish on the first try.

There is a prompt-injection guard built in. Fetched pages, images and prototypes are treated as evidence, not as instructions, so text that tells the agent to change roles or reveal prompts gets flagged and the walkthrough continues. Worth knowing if you feed it live pages from the web.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mastepanoski/claude-skills --skill cognitive-walkthrough -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/cognitive-walkthrough/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/cognitive-walkthrough/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mastepanoski/claude-skills --skill cognitive-walkthrough -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/cognitive-walkthrough/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mastepanoski/claude-skills --skill cognitive-walkthrough -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/cognitive-walkthrough/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mastepanoski/claude-skills cognitive-walkthrough
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/cognitive-walkthrough/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mastepanoski/claude-skills --skill cognitive-walkthrough -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mastepanoski/claude-skills --path skills/cognitive-walkthrough
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/cognitive-walkthrough/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mastepanoski/claude-skills --skill cognitive-walkthrough -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/mastepanoski/claude-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/cognitive-walkthrough/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find the step where new users abandon the signup form
- compare two versions of the same screen for first-use learnability
- spot controls that exist but nobody notices
- generate hypotheses before a usability test
- explain why users fail to finish a flow

## Example prompts
- Run a cognitive walkthrough on the checkout flow for a first-time mobile user
- Use cognitive-walkthrough on file upload in the dashboard, persona is a first visit
- Compare the two payment screen mockups with cognitive-walkthrough

# Cognitive Walkthrough

This skill enables AI agents to perform a **task-specific usability evaluation** using the Cognitive Walkthrough method, a technique that simulates how users (especially novices) think through completing specific tasks in an interface.

Unlike broad heuristic evaluations, Cognitive Walkthrough provides deep analysis of particular user journeys, identifying where users get stuck, confused, or make errors.

Use this skill when you need granular, task-focused insights into learnability and ease of first use.

Combine with "Nielsen Heuristics" for general usability, "Don Norman Principles" for intuitive design, or "WCAG Accessibility" for inclusive access.

## When to Use This Skill

Invoke this skill when:
- Analyzing specific user tasks (e.g., "complete checkout", "upload a file")
- Evaluating learnability for first-time users
- Identifying points of confusion in a flow
- Debugging why users fail to complete tasks
- Assessing onboarding or critical user journeys
- Comparing alternative designs for the same task
- Preparing for usability testing (hypothesis generation)

## Inputs Required

When executing this walkthrough, gather:

- **task_description**: Specific task to evaluate (e.g., "Create a new account and add first item to wishlist") [REQUIRED]
- **user_persona**: Target user type (novice/intermediate/expert, demographics, goals, prior experience) [REQUIRED]
- **interface_description**: Description of the interface (web/mobile app, key features) [REQUIRED]
- **screenshots_or_prototype**: Visual references of the interface [OPTIONAL but highly recommended]
- **starting_point**: Where the task begins (e.g., "homepage", "logged-in dashboard") [OPTIONAL, defaults to common entry point]
- **success_criteria**: How to know task is complete [OPTIONAL, inferred from task if not specified]

## The Cognitive Walkthrough Method

Cognitive Walkthrough evaluates **four key questions** at each step:

### For Each Action in the Task:

**Q1: Will users try to achieve the right effect?**
- Do users understand what they need to do next?
- Is the goal of this step clear?
- Does it match their mental model of the task?

**Q2: Will users notice that the correct action is available?**
- Is the control/action visible?
- Can users find what they need to interact with?
```
