## What it does

The skill drives themes for the Claude desktop app: it applies a theme from `~/.codexthemes/themes/<theme-id>/`, switches between installed ones, brings back the native look, and checks what is actually running. TypeScript scripts inside own the reversible injection. Creating themes is out of scope — separate skills handle that.

Run the commands from the installed skill directory. The runtime injects only its own `<style>` element over Claude's loopback debugging endpoint. It never touches the signed app bundle, and the theme lands on every open Claude page, not just one window. Locally you need Node.js 20+, `npx` and the official Claude desktop app.

Every apply measures rendered pixel contrast after injection. If text turns unreadable, the theme reverts on its own and the report carries the measurements. Worth knowing before you commit to a theme: pass `--force` only when you deliberately want to keep the unreadable one. The first apply in an app session needs a Claude restart, and the skill asks for permission first.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codexthemes/skills --skill codex-theme-switcher -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/codex-theme-switcher/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/codex-theme-switcher/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codexthemes/skills --skill codex-theme-switcher -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/codex-theme-switcher/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codexthemes/skills --skill codex-theme-switcher -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/codex-theme-switcher/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install codexthemes/skills codex-theme-switcher
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/codex-theme-switcher/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codexthemes/skills --skill codex-theme-switcher -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/codexthemes/skills --path skills/codex-theme-switcher
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/codex-theme-switcher/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codexthemes/skills --skill codex-theme-switcher -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/codexthemes/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/codex-theme-switcher/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- apply a Claude theme from the local library
- switch between installed themes without a restart
- restore the native Claude look with one command
- check which theme is active across all pages
- roll back to the previous theme if the new one disappoints

## Example prompts
- list my installed Claude themes and tell me which one is active
- apply the midnight-blue theme
- restore the native Claude look

# Switch the active Codex theme

Apply a theme from the managed local library `~/.codexthemes/themes/<theme-id>/` to the running Codex desktop app, switch between installed themes, restore the native look, and verify what is actually active. This skill is standalone: its TypeScript scripts own the reversible injection runtime. It does not create or edit themes (codex-theme-creator), install them from the gallery (codex-theme-installer), or publish them (codex-theme-submitter). The only required local tools are Node.js 20+, `npx`, and the official Codex desktop app.

Run all commands from the installed skill directory. The runtime injects only an owned `<style>` element over Codex's loopback-only debugging endpoint; it never modifies the signed app bundle, and it themes **every** open Codex page, not just one window.

## Step 1: pick the theme

```bash
npx tsx scripts/switch-theme.ts list
```

Lists every installed theme (id, name, layout mode) and which one is currently active. Themes arrive in the library from codex-theme-creator (created locally) or codex-theme-installer (downloaded from codexthemes.ai). If the theme the user wants is not listed, hand off to those skills instead of guessing paths.

## Step 2: apply or switch

```bash
npx tsx scripts/switch-theme.ts apply <theme-id>
```

- If Codex is already exposing its debugging endpoint (it is after any previous themed launch), this hot-swaps the theme in place on every open page — no restart, output `{"status": "active", "pagesThemed": n}`.
- If there is no endpoint (first apply of this app session, or Codex was fully quit), ask the user for explicit permission to restart Codex, then rerun with `--launch`:

```bash
npx tsx scripts/switch-theme.ts apply <theme-id> --launch
```

`--launch` prints `{"status": "scheduled"}` and hands the quit → relaunch → inject sequence to a detached helper that survives the restart (an agent hosted inside Codex dies with it; expect the tool call to be interrupted). Never build your own restart mechanism — no shell wrappers, launchd or scheduled tasks, or script copies; the helper already survives the restart.
