# codex-theme-creator

This skill builds a theme for the official Claude desktop app from a written brief or a reference image, checks it in the live app and packages it as a .codex-theme.

## What it does

The skill takes a theme from brief to portable package. First it writes a design contract: layout mode, background scope, decor density, light or dark mode, semantic palette, and which surfaces may change. Then it captures the native contract in the unmodified app — home heading, suggestion cards, composer, settings, menus, diffs, terminal before and after xterm mounts — and builds CSS in layers: semantic tokens, shell surfaces, route-scoped backgrounds, native components.

TypeScript scripts handle scaffolding, validation, reversible session application and restore. A theme never touches `app.asar`, the signed app bundle, WindowsApps, user tasks or authentication data. Everything lands in `~/.codexthemes`: editable source and artwork under `themes/<theme-id>/`, previews beside them, shareable packages in `exports/`, runtime state in `state/`. The only local tools required are Node.js, `npx` and the official Claude desktop app.

If the sandbox blocks writes to `~/.codexthemes`, the skill asks you to approve that path instead of staging files elsewhere and moving them later. Background scope is baked into the CSS selectors, so switching from `home` to `workspace` afterwards means rebuilding the theme — worth deciding up front. The skill also stays standalone: it will not read or combine another installed theme skill unless you name that source yourself.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codexthemes/skills --skill codex-theme-creator -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/codex-theme-creator/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/codex-theme-creator/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codexthemes/skills --skill codex-theme-creator -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/codex-theme-creator/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codexthemes/skills --skill codex-theme-creator -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/codex-theme-creator/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install codexthemes/skills codex-theme-creator
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/codex-theme-creator/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codexthemes/skills --skill codex-theme-creator -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/codexthemes/skills --path skills/codex-theme-creator
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/codex-theme-creator/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codexthemes/skills --skill codex-theme-creator -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/codexthemes/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/codex-theme-creator/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build a Claude theme from a reference image
- keep the native app layout and change only the look
- check a theme in the live app before packaging
- package a theme into a portable `.codex-theme` for submission
- restore the app after applying a theme

## Example prompts
- Build a Claude theme from this reference, background on the home page only
- Rework the theme, conversation text is hard to read over the artwork
- Package the current theme as a `.codex-theme` into `~/.codexthemes/exports/`

description: Create, redesign, validate, preview, package, and prepare cohesive themes for the official Codex desktop app from a visual brief or reference image. # Create a Codex theme

Create a reversible decorative theme without modifying `app.asar`, the signed app bundle, WindowsApps, user tasks, or authentication data. Preserve native layout and interaction behavior unless the chosen layout mode explicitly permits a bounded composition change.

## Authority boundary

Use this skill as the sole design and QA authority for a new Codex theme. Do not read, copy, or combine another installed theme skill, finished theme manifest, finished theme CSS, or local theme collection unless the user explicitly names that source. Do not describe the workflow as combining this skill with “local theme conventions.” Start from this skill's matching skeleton and the user's brief or reference image.

This skill is standalone. Its TypeScript scripts own scaffolding, validation, reversible session application, and restore. Never detect, invoke, read configuration from, or claim a dependency on CodeDrobe, Dream/Fiona, or another theme injector unless the user explicitly asks to use that product. Do not reuse their marker names or runtime data. The only required local tools are Node.js, `npx`, and the official Codex desktop app.

## Managed storage

Keep every generated theme file in the managed library `~/.codexthemes` unless the user explicitly requests another location:

- editable source and artwork: `~/.codexthemes/themes/<theme-id>/`
- previews: `~/.codexthemes/themes/<theme-id>/previews/`
- shareable packages: `~/.codexthemes/exports/`
- runtime state: `~/.codexthemes/state/`
```
