## What it does

The skill loads when you write tests, set up test infrastructure, or review coverage. Inside are patterns for .NET 10: plain xUnit v3 tests, integration tests through `WebApplicationFactory<Program>`, Testcontainers for PostgreSQL, SQL Server and Redis, Verify snapshot tests, test data builders, and `FakeTimeProvider` from `Microsoft.Extensions.TimeProvider.Testing`.

Its core claim is that one `WebApplicationFactory` test beats a unit test, because it exercises routing, binding, validation, business logic and persistence together. The samples show how to swap the real database for a container and run migrations inside `InitializeAsync`. AAA (Arrange, Act, Assert) is called mandatory, and tests should cover behavior rather than implementation.

One caveat: the samples target xUnit v3, where `IAsyncLifetime.InitializeAsync` returns `ValueTask` instead of the `Task` used in v2. On a v2 project you will rewrite those signatures. Testcontainers also needs Docker running, otherwise the database containers never start.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit --skill testing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/testing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/testing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit --skill testing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/testing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit --skill testing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/testing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit testing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/testing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit --skill testing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit --path skills/testing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/testing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit --skill testing -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit/tree/HEAD/skills/testing/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- write an integration test across the whole HTTP pipeline
- spin up a real PostgreSQL or SQL Server inside a test
- compare an API response against a snapshot instead of hand-written asserts
- build test data with a builder and stop duplicating setup
- test code that depends on the current time

## Example prompts
- write an integration test for POST /api/orders using WebApplicationFactory
- set up Testcontainers with PostgreSQL for the test suite
- add a Verify snapshot test for the GetOrder response

# Testing (.NET 10)

## Core Principles

1. **Integration tests are the highest-value tests** — A single `WebApplicationFactory` test covers routing, binding, validation, business logic, and persistence in one shot. Start here before writing unit tests.
2. **Real databases in tests** — Use Testcontainers to spin up real PostgreSQL/SQL Server instances. In-memory providers hide real bugs (transactions, constraints, SQL generation).
3. **AAA pattern is mandatory** — Every test has three clearly separated sections: Arrange, Act, Assert. No mixing.
4. **Test behavior, not implementation** — Tests should survive refactoring. Test what the system does, not how it does it.

## Patterns

### xUnit v3 Basics

```csharp
public class OrderServiceTests
{
    [Fact]
    public async Task CreateOrder_WithValidItems_ReturnsSuccessResult()
    {
        // Arrange
        var db = CreateInMemoryDb();
        var clock = new FakeTimeProvider(new DateTimeOffset(2025, 1, 15, 0, 0, 0, TimeSpan.Zero));
        var service = new OrderService(db, clock);
        var request = new CreateOrderRequest("customer-1", [new("product-1", 2)]);
        // Act
        var result = await service.CreateAsync(request);
        // Assert
        Assert.True(result.IsSuccess);
        Assert.NotEqual(Guid.Empty, result.Value.Id);
        Assert.Equal(clock.GetUtcNow(), result.Value.CreatedAt);
    }
    [Theory]
    [InlineData("")]
    [InlineData(null)]
    public async Task CreateOrder_WithInvalidCustomerId_ReturnsFailure(string? customerId)
    {
        // Arrange
        var service = CreateService();
        // Act
        var result = await service.CreateAsync(new CreateOrderRequest(customerId!, []));
        // Assert
        Assert.False(result.IsSuccess);
    }
}
```

### Integration Tests with WebApplicationFactory

The highest-value test pattern. Tests the full HTTP pipeline.

```csharp
// Fixtures/ApiFixture.cs
public class ApiFixture : WebApplicationFactory<Program>, IAsyncLifetime
{
    private readonly PostgreSqlContainer _postgres = new PostgreSqlBuilder()
        .WithImage("postgres:18")
        .Build();
````

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 20f7b33f7e92f52f tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
