# error-handling

Defines an error-handling strategy for .NET 10 with Result, ProblemDetails, validation, and a global exception handler. Use it when shaping API error contracts.

## What it does

This skill separates expected failures from unexpected faults in .NET 10 applications. Expected outcomes use the `Result` pattern, while failures such as lost database connections or network timeouts reach a global handler. API errors use RFC 9457 `ProblemDetails` with `type`, `title`, `status`, `detail`, and optional `errors`.

It includes a `ToProblemDetails` extension for mapping `Result` values and typed error records such as `NotFoundError`, `ValidationError`, and `ConflictError` for HTTP status mapping. The global `UseExceptionHandler` example logs unhandled exceptions. Exception details are exposed only in a development environment.

Incoming requests are validated at the API boundary with `FluentValidation` and `IEndpointFilter`. Using exceptions for ordinary control flow is a design issue this skill explicitly steers away from.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit --skill error-handling -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/error-handling/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/error-handling/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit --skill error-handling -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/error-handling/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit --skill error-handling -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/error-handling/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit error-handling
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/error-handling/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit --skill error-handling -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit --path skills/error-handling
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/error-handling/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codewithmukesh/dotnet-claude-kit --skill error-handling -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- return an expected failure without throwing an exception
- map a `Result` to a `ProblemDetails` response
- catch unhandled exceptions in a global handler
- validate an incoming request before business logic
- map typed errors to HTTP status codes

## Example prompts
- Design .NET 10 API error handling with `Result` and `ProblemDetails`.
- Add a global exception handler with `UseExceptionHandler` in `Program.cs`.
- Create `ValidationFilter<CreateOrderRequest>` with `FluentValidation` for this endpoint.

# Error Handling

## Core Principles

1. **Use the Result pattern for expected failures** — Don't throw exceptions for things like "order not found" or "validation failed". These are expected outcomes, not exceptional conditions. See ADR-002.
2. **Reserve exceptions for unexpected failures** — Database connection lost, null reference bugs, network timeouts — these are truly exceptional and should propagate to the global handler.
3. **Every API error returns ProblemDetails** — RFC 9457 is the standard. Every error response has `type`, `title`, `status`, `detail`, and optionally `errors`.
4. **Validate at the boundary** — Validate incoming requests at the API layer, not deep inside business logic.

## Patterns

### Result Pattern

A simple, generic result type that carries either a value or errors.

```csharp
public class Result
{
    public bool IsSuccess { get; }
    public bool IsFailure => !IsSuccess;
    public List<string> Errors { get; }
    protected Result(bool isSuccess, List<string>? errors = null)
    {
        IsSuccess = isSuccess;
        Errors = errors ?? [];
    }
    public static Result Success() => new(true);
    public static Result Failure(params string[] errors) => new(false, [..errors]);
    public static Result<T> Success<T>(T value) => new(value);
    public static Result<T> Failure<T>(params string[] errors) => new(errors);
}
public class Result<T> : Result
{
    public T Value { get; }
    internal Result(T value) : base(true) => Value = value;
    internal Result(IEnumerable<string> errors) : base(false, [..errors]) => Value = default!;
}
```

### Result to ProblemDetails Mapping

```csharp
public static class ResultExtensions
{
    public static IResult ToProblemDetails(this Result result, int statusCode = 400)
    {
        return TypedResults.Problem(
            title: "One or more errors occurred",
            statusCode: statusCode,
            extensions: new Dictionary<string, object?>
            {
                ["errors"] = result.Errors
            });
    }
}
// Usage in endpoint
group.MapPost("/", async (CreateOrder.Command command, ISender sender, CancellationToken ct) =>
{
    var result = await sender.Send(command, ct);
````

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 811b55f1fdbca9fc tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
