# codebase-wiki

A skill that has the agent write a markdown wiki of your repo: architecture, modules, flows, glossary. Useful once a codebase grows past what one person can hold in their head.

## What it does

The skill fixes the shape of an in-repo wiki. The agent reads your source and files the result under `wiki/`: `architecture/` for boundaries and layers, `modules/` with one page per package, `flows/` for end-to-end sequences, `concepts/` as a glossary, and `guides/` answering "where do I change X". The hub is `wiki/OVERVIEW.md`, holding the big-picture diagram and a nav map to every section.

Generation follows the phased procedure in `references/generate-and-refresh.md` rather than free-form writing. The mode is detected for you: an empty `source_commit` in `OVERVIEW.md` means generate from scratch; a stamped one means refresh, diffing `source_commit..HEAD` and updating only the affected pages. Source code is read with native tools such as `Read` and `Grep`, while pages are authored through the OpenKnowledge MCP server — hand-writing wiki markdown is off the table.

Two knobs come from how you phrase the request and get recorded in `OVERVIEW.md`: audience (`internal` by default, or `public`) and depth (`tour`, `standard` by default, `exhaustive`). You need the OpenKnowledge MCP server configured, and the pack itself is installed project-local with `ok seed --pack codebase-wiki`. The skill layers on top of the platform `open-knowledge` skill instead of replacing it, so the markdown rules still come from there. Worth checking that OK is set up first — otherwise there is nothing for the skill to write into.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add inkeep/open-knowledge-skills --skill codebase-wiki -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/codebase-wiki/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/codebase-wiki/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add inkeep/open-knowledge-skills --skill codebase-wiki -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/codebase-wiki/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add inkeep/open-knowledge-skills --skill codebase-wiki -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/codebase-wiki/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install inkeep/open-knowledge-skills codebase-wiki
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/codebase-wiki/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add inkeep/open-knowledge-skills --skill codebase-wiki -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/inkeep/open-knowledge-skills --path skills/starter-packs/codebase-wiki/codebase-wiki
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/codebase-wiki/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add inkeep/open-knowledge-skills --skill codebase-wiki -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/inkeep/open-knowledge-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/starter-packs/codebase-wiki/codebase-wiki/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- generate a wiki for an unfamiliar repository
- refresh stale pages after a run of commits
- explain the architecture to a new developer
- draw an end-to-end flow as a sequence diagram
- give the agent durable context about the codebase

## Example prompts
- build the wiki for this repo, internal audience, standard depth
- refresh the wiki: diff from source_commit to HEAD
- build a public wiki, no internal tickets or secrets

# Codebase Wiki pack — how to work here

This project holds an **agent-authored wiki of a codebase** — DeepWiki, but living in the repo. A coding agent reads the source and writes a navigable, diagram-rich, source-grounded wiki as markdown under `wiki/`. It is version-controlled and diffable, private by default, human+agent co-editable, renders in OK's live preview, and doubles as durable grounding context for future agent sessions. There is no separate Q&A surface — Q&A is "the OK-grounded agent + `search`".

> This skill is pack guidance. The platform `/open-knowledge` skill (read/write/preview/linking/grounding rules) still governs every markdown operation — this layers the wiki workflow on top.

## The shape

```
wiki/
  OVERVIEW.md     hub: what it is, a big-picture architecture diagram, a nav map to every section.
                  Frontmatter carries `profile` (audience/depth) + `source_commit` (freshness anchor).
  log.md          append-only generation / refresh audit trail
  architecture/   system boundaries, layers, subsystems, cross-cutting concerns + diagrams
  modules/        one page per package / module: purpose, entry points, key files, deps
  flows/          key end-to-end flows as sequence / flow diagrams + narrative
