## What it does

The skill kicks in when you build or debug Cloudinary inside a React app: Vite, Create React App, Parcel, Next.js. It ships patterns for a config file with a single `cld` instance, `AdvancedImage` and `AdvancedVideo`, transformations, overlays, galleries, the video player, and signed uploads. Separate reference files cover TypeScript and common failures.

The real payoff is the import table. The agent is told not to invent subpaths: `text` and `image` come from `qualifiers/source`, `Position` from `qualifiers/position`. If your model kept reaching for `actions/overlay`, this is the fix. There is also a walkthrough of familiar breakage — `createUploadWidget is not a function`, wrong imports from `@cloudinary/url-gen`, upload preset trouble, video player DOM errors.

On Vite you need the `VITE_` prefix in `.env` and `import.meta.env` in code, not `process.env`. Restart the dev server after editing `.env`; if the variable is still empty in the browser, clear `node_modules/.vite/` and hard refresh. Signed uploads mean generating the signature on your backend, so the secret never reaches the client. React Native uploads work differently — the `upload()` method and server SDKs — so these patterns do not carry over as-is.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cloudinary-devs/skills --skill cloudinary-react -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/cloudinary-react/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/cloudinary-react/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cloudinary-devs/skills --skill cloudinary-react -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/cloudinary-react/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cloudinary-devs/skills --skill cloudinary-react -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/cloudinary-react/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install cloudinary-devs/skills cloudinary-react
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/cloudinary-react/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cloudinary-devs/skills --skill cloudinary-react -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/cloudinary-devs/skills --path skills/frameworks/cloudinary-react
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/cloudinary-react/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cloudinary-devs/skills --skill cloudinary-react -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- set up a Cloudinary config with one shared `cld` instance
- fix the `createUploadWidget is not a function` error
- render an image with a transformation via `AdvancedImage`
- find the right module for `text` and `Position` imports
- wire up signed uploads with a backend signature

## Example prompts
- Set up Cloudinary in my Vite project: create the config with a cld instance and wire up AdvancedImage
- I keep getting createUploadWidget is not a function in React — find the cause and fix it
- Add a text overlay to an image with @cloudinary/url-gen and show me the exact imports

## When to Use

- When a user is building or debugging Cloudinary in a **React** app (Vite, Create React App, Parcel, etc.).
- When implementing or fixing: Upload Widget, AdvancedImage/AdvancedVideo, transformations, overlays, image galleries, video player, or signed/unsigned uploads.
- When the user sees errors like "createUploadWidget is not a function", wrong imports from `@cloudinary/url-gen`, upload preset issues, or video player DOM errors.

## Quick Start

**Most common operations:**
1. **Setup**: Create config file with `cld` instance (see Project setup section)
2. **Display image**: `const img = cld.image('id').resize(fill().width(800)); <AdvancedImage cldImg={img} />`
3. **Upload Widget**: Script in index.html + poll for `createUploadWidget` in useEffect
4. **Image overlay**: Use `source(text(...))` or `source(image(...))` - see Import reference table for exact paths
5. **Signed uploads**: See [references/signed-uploads.md](references/signed-uploads.md)
6. **Troubleshooting**: See [references/troubleshooting.md](references/troubleshooting.md)

**For TypeScript**: See [references/typescript-patterns.md](references/typescript-patterns.md)
**For Video Player**: See [references/video-player.md](references/video-player.md)

## Instructions

When helping with Cloudinary in React, follow the patterns and rules below. Use the **exact** import paths and code patterns specified; do not guess subpaths or invent APIs.
