# cloudflare-troubleshooting

A skill that diagnoses Cloudflare misconfigurations through API evidence: redirect loops, SSL errors, DNS problems. No guessing.

## What it does

The skill pushes the agent toward evidence before conclusions. Instead of assuming what broke, it queries the actual Cloudflare configuration: SSL mode, the Always Use HTTPS setting, Page Rules, DNS records, DNSSEC status, certificate packs and firewall rules.

It ships with concrete `curl` sequences for the usual failures. For `ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS` it checks SSL mode, then Always Use HTTPS, then Page Rules, and only after that tests the origin directly. If the mode is `flexible` while the origin enforces HTTPS, that explains the loop on its own. Similar branches cover errors 525 and 526, 502/503/504, and DNS.

You need a domain plus API access: account email with a Global API Key, or an API Token. The skill reuses an existing authorized connection and asks only for what is missing. The Global API Key lives under Cloudflare Dashboard → My Profile → API Tokens. One caveat worth knowing: if you run a Pages hostname that was never attached to a zone, an empty zone lookup is a finding to work from, not a reason to create a new zone.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill cloudflare-troubleshooting -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/cloudflare-troubleshooting/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/cloudflare-troubleshooting/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill cloudflare-troubleshooting -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/cloudflare-troubleshooting/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill cloudflare-troubleshooting -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/cloudflare-troubleshooting/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install daymade/claude-code-skills cloudflare-troubleshooting
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/cloudflare-troubleshooting/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill cloudflare-troubleshooting -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/daymade/claude-code-skills --path cloudflare-troubleshooting
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/cloudflare-troubleshooting/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill cloudflare-troubleshooting -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/daymade/claude-code-skills/tree/HEAD/cloudflare-troubleshooting/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- trace why a site keeps bouncing through redirects
- find what causes error 526 under strict SSL
- verify where DNS records point and whether the proxy is on
- separate an origin failure from a Cloudflare setting
- purge a stale HTTP redirect from cache after a fix

## Example prompts
- My site is stuck in ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS — check my Cloudflare settings via the API and tell me what to change
- I'm getting error 526, look at the certificate status and SSL mode for my domain
- The custom domain won't load but pages.dev works, check DNS and the binding

# Cloudflare Troubleshooting

> **Methodology base:** the general evidence-driven network-diagnosis discipline (falsification, layered isolation, counter-review) lives in the **debugging-network-issues** skill. This skill is the Cloudflare *domain* layer on top of it.

## Core Principle

**Investigate with evidence, not assumptions.** Always query Cloudflare API to examine actual configuration before diagnosing issues. The skill's value is the systematic investigation methodology, not predetermined solutions.

## Investigation Methodology

### 1. Gather Credentials

Reuse the domain and authorized Cloudflare connection already supplied by the user or project configuration. Ask only for missing connection information: domain, account email plus Global API Key, or API Token. Keep the working authentication method; troubleshooting does not require replacing it.

Global API Key location: Cloudflare Dashboard → My Profile → API Tokens → View Global API Key

### 2. Get Zone Information

For zone-scoped troubleshooting, obtain the zone ID:

```bash
curl -s -X GET "https://api.cloudflare.com/client/v4/zones?name=<domain>" \
  -H "X-Auth-Email: <email>" \
  -H "X-Auth-Key: <api_key>" | jq '.'
```

Select the exact matching zone and account before extracting its `id`; do not blindly select the first result when account or domain identity is ambiguous. Use that zone’s `account.id` for account-scoped calls.

For a Pages hostname that has never been attached, an empty exact-zone result is a finding, not an account ID or proof that the site is absent. Resolve the existing account/project from its authorized configuration and follow [Pages custom domains and DNSSEC migration](references/pages-custom-domain.md). Do not create a zone merely to make this lookup succeed.

### 3. Investigate Systematically

For each issue, gather evidence before making conclusions. Use Cloudflare API to inspect:
- Current configuration state
- Recent changes (if audit log available)
- Related settings that might interact
