# cloudflare-development

A skill that hands your agent Cloudflare edge practices: Workers, Pages, KV, D1, R2 and Durable Objects. Useful when the agent writes worker code or edits wrangler.toml.

## What it does

The skill gives the agent a set of Cloudflare conventions: worker structure with a `fetch` handler and typed `Env`, a `wrangler.toml` layout with KV, D1, R2 and Durable Object bindings, plus query and storage patterns. The examples are TypeScript and SQL — parameterized queries via `.prepare().bind()`, batch writes, schema migrations, bucket upload and download, WebSocket sessions inside Durable Objects.

There is a Pages section too: project layout with `public/` and `functions/`, handlers like `onRequestGet` and `onRequestPost`. A security section covers request validation, though the text cuts off there, so treat that part as incomplete.

What it means for you: the agent stops porting Node.js server habits into edge code and follows the platform's own shape instead. The skill is also blunt about limits — KV is eventually consistent, so it is the wrong place for counters or anything transactional.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill cloudflare-development -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/cloudflare-development/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/cloudflare-development/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill cloudflare-development -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/cloudflare-development/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill cloudflare-development -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/cloudflare-development/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Mindrally/skills cloudflare-development
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/cloudflare-development/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill cloudflare-development -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Mindrally/skills --path cloudflare-development
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/cloudflare-development/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill cloudflare-development -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Mindrally/skills/tree/HEAD/cloudflare-development/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- write a worker with routing and error handling
- wire KV, D1 and R2 bindings into `wrangler.toml`
- build a parameterized D1 query that resists SQL injection
- run a WebSocket room on Durable Objects
- write a D1 schema migration

## Example prompts
- Write a Cloudflare worker that returns the user list from D1 at `/api/users`
- Set up `wrangler.toml` for a worker with KV and R2 bindings
- Add a Pages Function with `onRequestPost` that takes JSON and inserts a row into D1

# Cloudflare Development Best Practices

## Overview

This skill provides comprehensive guidelines for developing applications on Cloudflare's edge platform, including Workers, Pages, KV storage, D1 databases, R2 object storage, and Durable Objects.

## Core Principles

- Write lightweight, fast code optimized for edge execution
- Minimize cold start times and execution duration
- Use appropriate storage solutions for each use case
- Follow security best practices for edge computing
- Leverage Cloudflare's global network for performance

## Cloudflare Workers Guidelines

### Basic Worker Structure
```typescript
export default {
  async fetch(request: Request, env: Env, ctx: ExecutionContext): Promise<Response> {
    try {
      const url = new URL(request.url);
      // Route handling
      if (url.pathname === '/api/data') {
        return handleApiRequest(request, env);
      }
      return new Response('Not Found', { status: 404 });
    } catch (error) {
      console.error('Worker error:', error);
      return new Response('Internal Server Error', { status: 500 });
    }
  },
} satisfies ExportedHandler<Env>;
```

### Environment Types
```typescript
interface Env {
  // KV Namespaces
  MY_KV: KVNamespace;
  // D1 Databases
  MY_DB: D1Database;
  // R2 Buckets
  MY_BUCKET: R2Bucket;
  // Durable Objects
  MY_DURABLE_OBJECT: DurableObjectNamespace;
  // Environment Variables
  API_KEY: string;
}
```

### Best Practices
- Use TypeScript for type safety
- Handle errors at the edge appropriately
- Implement proper request validation
- Use `ctx.waitUntil()` for background tasks
- Minimize external API calls when possible

## Wrangler Configuration

### wrangler.toml Structure
```toml
name = "my-worker"
main = "src/index.ts"
compatibility_date = "2024-01-01"
[vars]
ENVIRONMENT = "production"
[[kv_namespaces]]
binding = "MY_KV"
id = "abc123"
[[d1_databases]]
binding = "MY_DB"
database_name = "my-database"
database_id = "def456"
[[r2_buckets]]
binding = "MY_BUCKET"
bucket_name = "my-bucket"
[durable_objects]
bindings = [
  { name = "MY_DURABLE_OBJECT", class_name = "MyDurableObject" }
]
[[migrations]]
tag = "v1"
new_classes = ["MyDurableObject"]
```

## KV Storage Guidelines

### Usage Patterns
```typescript
// Writing to KV
await env.MY_KV.put('key', JSON.stringify(data), {
  expirationTtl: 3600, // 1 hour
  metadata: { version: '1.0' },
});
// Reading from KV
const value = await env.MY_KV.get('key', { type: 'json' });
// Listing keys
