# cloud-onboarding

Sets up the elastic CLI context and hands out Elastic Cloud access: invites, Serverless project roles, API keys.

## What it does

The skill walks your agent through `elastic` CLI setup: it registers a `cloud` context with an Elastic Cloud API key, makes that context active, and validates control-plane reach by listing organizations. That call also returns the organization ID the later steps need. The key lands in the OS keychain, so nobody pastes a secret into the chat.

From there it handles identity and access. It invites users, assigns predefined Serverless project roles (`admin`, `developer`, `viewer`, `editor`, the Security analyst roles) or creates a custom role and attaches it through `application_roles`. Cloud API keys can be created, listed and revoked. Roles are not pre-checked: the skill attempts the operation and stops on a `403`, asking you to verify the key's permissions.

You need the `elastic` CLI version 0.2 or newer with `cloud` support and network access to `api.elastic-cloud.com`. Only organization owners can create Cloud API keys, so the key has to be generated with Project Admin privileges or higher. Custom-role work additionally needs an Elasticsearch context on the target Serverless project with `manage_security`. This targets the Elastic Cloud control plane, so it does nothing for self-managed clusters — worth checking before you plan any access work.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill cloud-onboarding -a claude-code
```
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill onboarding -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/onboarding/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/onboarding/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill onboarding -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/onboarding/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill onboarding -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/onboarding/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install elastic/agent-skills onboarding
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/onboarding/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill onboarding -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/elastic/agent-skills --path skills/cloud/onboarding
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/onboarding/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add elastic/agent-skills --skill onboarding -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/elastic/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/cloud/onboarding/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- configure the `elastic` CLI context and confirm it reaches Elastic Cloud
- invite someone to the organization with a project role in one go
- audit who holds which roles across Serverless projects
- create a custom role and assign it via `application_roles`
- revoke a Cloud API key that is no longer needed

## Example prompts
- set up the `elastic` CLI context for Elastic Cloud and check the key works
- invite alice to the search project as a developer
- list every member of the organization and their roles

# Cloud Onboarding

Stand up access to an Elastic Cloud organization end to end: configure the `elastic` CLI so it can operate the control
plane, then manage identity and access — invite users, assign predefined or custom roles to Serverless projects, and
manage Cloud API keys. For creating and operating projects and deployments, use the **cloud-provisioning** skill.

## Environment Configuration

This skill configures the `elastic` CLI itself, so its setup lives here rather than being assumed. If the
[`elastic` CLI](https://github.com/elastic/cli#configuration) is not installed, tell the user what it is needed for.

Cloud control-plane access is authenticated by an **Elastic Cloud API key** (organization scope), stored in a CLI
**context**. Register it without ever having the user paste the secret into the chat:

- Only **Organization owners** can create Cloud API keys. Direct the user to generate one at
  [Elastic Cloud API keys](https://cloud.elastic.co/account/keys) with **Project Admin** privileges or higher so it can
  manage serverless projects.
- If the user has no Elastic Cloud account, propose the free
  [Elastic Cloud trial](https://cloud.elastic.co/registration) (14 days, no credit card). Once registered, continue with
  key generation.
- Add the key to a context (the secret is stored in the OS keychain, not echoed):
  `elastic config context add cloud --cloud-url https://api.elastic-cloud.com --cloud-api-key <KEY>`, then make it
  active with `elastic config current-context set cloud`.
