# frontend-design

The skill makes the agent pick a bold visual direction before writing code, then hold it through every detail. Useful when a generated interface should not look generated.

## What it does

It kicks in when you ask the agent to build a component, page or app. Before any code, it works through the context: what the interface is for, who uses it, what technical limits apply, and what one thing should stick in memory. Then it commits to a single direction — brutal minimalism, maximalist chaos, retro-futurism, editorial, art deco — and stays there.

The rules cover typography, colour, motion and composition. Fonts should be characterful rather than Arial or Inter; palettes live in CSS variables with sharp accents instead of evenly spread colour; animation goes through CSS for plain HTML and the Motion library for React. Layouts are told to break the grid, use asymmetry, overlap, textures and grain instead of flat fills. The skill also names what to avoid: purple gradients on white, predictable component patterns, the same font choices turning up generation after generation.

Implementation complexity is meant to match the vision. Maximalist work needs elaborate animation and effects; a refined minimalist build needs restraint and careful spacing. It sits on top of whatever stack you name — HTML/CSS/JS, React, Vue. Worth installing if you already run an agent on frontend work and keep cleaning up the same generic layouts by hand.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cline/skills --skill frontend-design -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/frontend-design/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/frontend-design/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cline/skills --skill frontend-design -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/frontend-design/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cline/skills --skill frontend-design -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/frontend-design/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install cline/skills frontend-design
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/frontend-design/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cline/skills --skill frontend-design -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/cline/skills --path skills/frontend-design
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/frontend-design/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cline/skills --skill frontend-design -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/cline/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/frontend-design/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build a landing page that does not read as a template
- pick a display and body font pair instead of defaulting to Inter
- add a staggered page-load animation with CSS only
- break a predictable grid with asymmetry and overlap
- ship a React component with deliberate micro-interactions

## Example prompts
- build a pricing page for a SaaS product, pick a bold direction and refine the details
- make a product card in React, no purple gradients and no predictable layouts
- rework this form: editorial typography, lots of negative space, staggered reveal

---

This skill guides creation of distinctive, production-grade frontend interfaces that avoid generic "AI slop" aesthetics. Implement real working code with exceptional attention to aesthetic details and creative choices.

The user provides frontend requirements: a component, page, application, or interface to build. They may include context about the purpose, audience, or technical constraints.

## Design Thinking

Before coding, understand the context and commit to a BOLD aesthetic direction:
- **Purpose**: What problem does this interface solve? Who uses it?
- **Tone**: Pick an extreme: brutally minimal, maximalist chaos, retro-futuristic, organic/natural, luxury/refined, playful/toy-like, editorial/magazine, brutalist/raw, art deco/geometric, soft/pastel, industrial/utilitarian, etc. There are so many flavors to choose from. Use these for inspiration but design one that is true to the aesthetic direction.
- **Constraints**: Technical requirements (framework, performance, accessibility).
- **Differentiation**: What makes this UNFORGETTABLE? What's the one thing someone will remember?

**CRITICAL**: Choose a clear conceptual direction and execute it with precision. Bold maximalism and refined minimalism both work - the key is intentionality, not intensity.

Then implement working code (HTML/CSS/JS, React, Vue, etc.) that is:
- Production-grade and functional
- Visually striking and memorable
- Cohesive with a clear aesthetic point-of-view
- Meticulously refined in every detail

## Frontend Aesthetics Guidelines

Focus on:
- **Typography**: Choose fonts that are beautiful, unique, and interesting. Avoid generic fonts like Arial and Inter; opt instead for distinctive choices that elevate the frontend's aesthetics; unexpected, characterful font choices. Pair a distinctive display font with a refined body font.
- **Color & Theme**: Commit to a cohesive aesthetic. Use CSS variables for consistency. Dominant colors with sharp accents outperform timid, evenly-distributed palettes.
