## What it does

The skill lays out onboarding as a sequence of stages: prospect intake, CIP/KYC identity checks, suitability data collection, account type selection, document package assembly, e-signature, custodian submission, funding and the initial investment. Your agent leans on that structure when you ask it to design a digital account-opening flow or find where the current one stalls.

Identity verification gets its own section. Database checks against vendors like LexisNexis, Equifax, TransUnion and Alloy sit next to document upload with OCR and liveness detection, knowledge-based authentication and biometrics. Then come OFAC and FinCEN 314(a) screening, beneficial ownership collection for entities and trusts, and enhanced due diligence triggers such as PEP status or links to high-risk jurisdictions.

Suitability is covered too: which fields feed a risk profile, and how psychometric questionnaires differ from simpler scoring. There is no code in the skill, it is reference text. One thing to check before you rely on it: the compliance logic follows USA PATRIOT Act Section 326, the FinCEN CDD Rule and FINRA Rule 2111, so firms outside the US will need to swap in their own rules rather than reuse these as-is.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JoelLewis/finance_skills --skill client-onboarding -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/client-onboarding/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/client-onboarding/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JoelLewis/finance_skills --skill client-onboarding -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/client-onboarding/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JoelLewis/finance_skills --skill client-onboarding -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/client-onboarding/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install JoelLewis/finance_skills client-onboarding
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/client-onboarding/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JoelLewis/finance_skills --skill client-onboarding -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/JoelLewis/finance_skills --path plugins/advisory-practice/skills/client-onboarding
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/client-onboarding/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JoelLewis/finance_skills --skill client-onboarding -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/JoelLewis/finance_skills/tree/HEAD/plugins/advisory-practice/skills/client-onboarding/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- design a digital account-opening flow from intake to funding
- wire identity verification and CIP checks into onboarding
- cut NIGO rejections that come back from the custodian
- collect beneficial ownership data for an entity or trust account
- draft a suitability questionnaire for risk profiling

## Example prompts
- help me design an onboarding flow from prospect intake to funded account
- what checks do we need to open a trust account and collect beneficial ownership
- compare advisor-assisted and self-service onboarding for our firm

# Client Onboarding

## Core Concepts

### Onboarding Workflow Architecture
Client onboarding is an orchestrated, multi-stage process that transforms a prospect into a funded, investable account. The canonical stages are:

1. **Prospect intake** — capture contact information, establish CRM record, assign advisor
2. **Identity verification** — CIP/KYC checks (name, DOB, address, SSN/TIN, government ID)
3. **Suitability data collection** — investment objectives, risk tolerance, time horizon, financial situation
4. **Account type selection** — individual, joint, trust, IRA, entity, or other structure
5. **Document generation** — assemble the required document package based on account type and features
6. **E-signature** — execute new account forms, agreements, and disclosures electronically
7. **Custodian submission** — transmit the completed application to the custodian for account creation
8. **Funding** — ACH, wire, ACAT transfer, or check deposit to fund the new account
9. **Initial investment** — assign the funded account to a model portfolio or execute the initial trade
```
