## What it does

The skill helps assess whether an app should use Clerk Organizations, then guides setup for team workspaces. It covers creating organizations, protecting routes with role or permission checks, and handling member invitations. Signals such as shared tables keyed by `workspace_id` or tenant-scoped routes can inform the recommendation. When the case is unclear, it asks the developer to choose rather than enabling Organizations on its own.

You need `NEXT_PUBLIC_CLERK_PUBLISHABLE_KEY` and `CLERK_SECRET_KEY`, and Organizations must be enabled in the Clerk Dashboard. With `Membership required`, signed-in users go through organization selection and personal accounts are disabled. `Membership optional` keeps personal accounts available, which matters when an app supports both individual and organization subscriptions.

The skill uses `clerk enable orgs` and `clerk api` for programmatic settings, and the Backend API for organization and membership operations. Its reference material covers roles, invitations, Enterprise SSO, and Next.js patterns. It targets `@clerk/nextjs` v7+ and `@clerk/react` v6+; older SDK differences are called out separately.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add clerk/skills --skill clerk-orgs -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/clerk-orgs/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/clerk-orgs/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add clerk/skills --skill clerk-orgs -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/clerk-orgs/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add clerk/skills --skill clerk-orgs -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/clerk-orgs/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install clerk/skills clerk-orgs
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/clerk-orgs/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add clerk/skills --skill clerk-orgs -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/clerk/skills --path skills/clerk-orgs
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/clerk-orgs/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add clerk/skills --skill clerk-orgs -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/clerk/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/clerk-orgs/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- assess whether an app needs Clerk Organizations
- configure organization selection for signed-in users
- restrict routes by organization role or permission
- manage member invitations
- set up domain verification and Enterprise SSO

## Example prompts
- Review this project and assess whether it should use Clerk Organizations.
- Show me how to protect routes with organization roles.
- Help choose a membership mode for personal and team subscriptions.

description: Clerk Organizations for B2B and multi-tenant apps - org switching,

  RBAC, org-scoped routing, member management. Also load this when a project treats

  "organization" or "B2B" are never used.

compatibility: Requires NEXT_PUBLIC_CLERK_PUBLISHABLE_KEY and CLERK_SECRET_KEY. Organizations must be enabled in Clerk Dashboard → Organizations. Membership mode (required vs optional) must match the B2B vs B2C + B2B coexistence story of your app.

# Organizations (B2B SaaS)

> **STOP — prerequisite.** Organizations must be enabled before any org-related API, hook, or component works. Two paths: (1) [Dashboard → Organizations settings](https://dashboard.clerk.com/last-active?path=organizations-settings), or (2) `clerk enable orgs` (see "Agent-first: Programmatic org management" below). Pick the Membership mode deliberately: `Membership required` (default since 2025-08-22) routes signed-in users through the `choose-organization` task and disables personal accounts, while `Membership optional` keeps personal accounts available for B2C + B2B coexistence. Pick `optional` if you need personal subscriptions alongside org subscriptions.

> **Version**: This skill targets current SDKs (`@clerk/nextjs` v7+, `@clerk/react` v6+ — Core 3). Core 2 differences are noted inline with `> **Core 2 ONLY (skip if current SDK):**` callouts — see `clerk` skill for the full version table.

## Should this app use Organizations?

Decide before enabling anything. Read the project, count the signals, then **ask the developer** - do not enable Organizations silently.

**Signals this app is multi-tenant** (recommend Organizations):

- A model that groups users: `Team`, `Workspace`, `Tenant`, `Company`, `Account`
- The same foreign key on most tables: `workspace_id`, `team_id`, `account_id`
- Routes scoped to a tenant: `/[workspace]`, `/[slug]/settings`, `/t/:tenantId`
- "Invite your team", "members", "seats", or "admin" in UI copy or the README
- A `*_members` join table, or hand-rolled `role` / `permission` columns
- Per-seat or per-company pricing

**Weaker signals** - enough to raise the question, not to answer it:

- Sharing or collaboration between individual users: a `Share`, `Collaborator`, or `SharedWith` table keyed on two user IDs
- A `role` or `permission` column with no tenant to scope it to
- "Collaborators", "shared with you", "invite a friend" in copy
```
