# clerk-expo

A skill that wires Clerk sign-in and sign-up into Expo and React Native apps. Useful when you want prebuilt auth screens or custom flows with OTP and MFA.

## What it does

The skill carries verified patterns for `@clerk/expo`: the provider, the token cache, the sign-in flows. Anything volatile, like component props or hook signatures, the agent reads from the installed package instead of guessing.

An intent map picks the path. Say "add auth" and you get the prebuilt native components `AuthView` and `UserButton` from `@clerk/expo/native`. If the project has to run in Expo Go, targets web, or needs its own UI, the skill switches to custom flows and tells you why. Mixing prebuilt components with custom forms for the same auth step is not allowed.

Setup needs a publishable key in `.env` and the Native API enabled in the Clerk dashboard. SMS and other factors depend on instance settings, so code written for a disabled factor fails at runtime rather than at build time. Worth checking the dashboard before the agent starts editing files. The skill expects `@clerk/expo` v3.4+, Expo SDK 53-56 and React Native 0.75+.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add clerk/skills --skill clerk-expo -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/clerk-expo/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/clerk-expo/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add clerk/skills --skill clerk-expo -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/clerk-expo/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add clerk/skills --skill clerk-expo -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/clerk-expo/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install clerk/skills clerk-expo
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/clerk-expo/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add clerk/skills --skill clerk-expo -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/clerk/skills --path skills/clerk-expo
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/clerk-expo/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add clerk/skills --skill clerk-expo -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- add email and password sign-in to an Expo app
- swap passwords for SMS codes or email OTP
- keep signed-out users off Expo Router screens
- set up Google or Apple sign-in
- keep the session alive across an app restart

## Example prompts
- add Clerk auth to my Expo app
- set up SMS code sign-in with @clerk/expo
- protect my Expo Router screens so signed-out users get redirected

# Clerk Expo (React Native)

Implement Clerk in Expo / React Native projects. This skill inlines verified patterns for the stable surface (provider, token cache, flows) and requires source inspection of the installed `@clerk/expo` package for anything volatile (component props, hook signatures).

## Activation Rules

Activate when either is true:
- The user asks for auth in an Expo or React Native app, or mentions `@clerk/expo`, `ClerkProvider`, Expo Router auth, or Clerk hooks in a native app.
- The project is Expo/React Native (`app.json` / `app.config.js`, `expo` in `package.json`, `metro.config.js`, `@clerk/expo` dependency).

Route away when:
- Native iOS/Swift project (`.xcodeproj`, `Package.swift`) → `clerk-swift`
- Native Android/Kotlin project (`build.gradle` without React Native) → `clerk-android`
- Web-only framework (Next.js, Remix, plain React, etc.) → the matching framework skill

## Intent Map

Match what the user asked for, then load the reference(s) listed. Load only what the task needs.

| User intent (examples) | Path | Reference |
|------------------------|------|-----------|
| "Add auth to my app" / "add sign-in with Clerk" | Prebuilt native components (default) | references/setup.md + references/prebuilt-components.md |
| "Add auth" but Expo Go / web / custom UI required | Custom flows | references/setup.md + references/custom-flows.md |
| "Add phone / SMS auth", "email OTP", "passwordless" | Custom flow, `phoneCode` / `emailCode` | references/custom-flows.md |
| "Sign in with Google/Apple/GitHub", "social login", "SSO" | Browser SSO or native buttons | references/sso-and-native-auth.md |
| "MFA / 2FA / TOTP", "forgot password", "email link" | Custom flow additions | references/custom-flows.md |
| "Protect routes/screens", "redirect if signed out" | Expo Router guards | references/protected-routes.md |
| "Show user profile", "org switching", "push notifications", "sign out", "call my backend" | App recipes | references/recipes.md |
| "Biometric login", "Face ID", "passkeys" | Device features | references/recipes.md |

## Default Path Decision

When the user says "add auth" without specifying UI:

1. **Default to prebuilt native components** (`AuthView` + `UserButton` from `@clerk/expo/native`). Fastest to working auth; UI is maintained by Clerk. Tell the developer they are in beta and require a development build.
