# clerk-cli

Teaches the agent to drive the clerk binary instead of hand-rolled curl: users, orgs, sessions, webhooks, deploy checks.

## What it does

The skill covers invoking `clerk`, a pre-authenticated gateway to Clerk's Backend and Platform APIs plus project-level tooling: login, repo linking, env pulls, instance config. When a task touches a Clerk resource, the agent reaches for the CLI rather than assembling HTTP calls, since the binary handles auth, key resolution and app targeting on its own.

Start with `clerk doctor --json`. It returns structured results with `name`, `status`, `message` and a `remedy` hint, so a missing login, an unlinked project or stale keys surface before later commands fail with confusing errors. Then pick how to invoke the binary: a global `clerk` if the version matches, otherwise a package runner chosen by the project lockfile — `bunx clerk@latest`, `npx -y clerk@latest`, `pnpm dlx clerk@latest` or `yarn dlx clerk@latest`. The npm package is `clerk`, not `@clerk/cli`.

The real trap is the sandbox. The CLI needs the OS keychain, the home directory, a browser with a localhost callback and network access to Clerk. Without them a command can report "Not logged in" or "not linked" on a perfectly healthy host. The skill treats the sandbox warning as authoritative: any auth, link, env or API failure from that run is untrusted until you rerun the same command on the host shell. Worth checking your environment before you start fixing keys.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add clerk/skills --skill clerk-cli -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/clerk-cli/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/clerk-cli/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add clerk/skills --skill clerk-cli -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/clerk-cli/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add clerk/skills --skill clerk-cli -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/clerk-cli/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install clerk/skills clerk-cli
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/clerk-cli/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add clerk/skills --skill clerk-cli -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/clerk/skills --path skills/clerk-cli
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/clerk-cli/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add clerk/skills --skill clerk-cli -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/clerk/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/clerk-cli/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- list Clerk users without writing curl calls
- impersonate a user to reproduce a bug
- test webhooks against a local server
- pull publishable and secret keys into `.env`
- run a health check before deploying

## Example prompts
- list the Clerk users in this app
- enable organizations for this Clerk instance
- run `clerk doctor --json` and tell me what failed

# Clerk CLI

The `clerk` binary is a pre-authenticated gateway to Clerk's Backend API and Platform API, plus project-level tooling (auth, linking, env pulls, instance config). When the user asks anything that touches a Clerk resource, reach for `clerk` first instead of hand-rolling `curl`.

For setup or `init` requests, use the [`clerk-setup`](../clerk-setup/SKILL.md) skill as the source of truth. Its package-runner, accountless, migration, and init-first guidance takes precedence over the general operational prerequisites below.

> This skill targets clerk `latest`. If `clerk --version` disagrees with the latest available CLI, refresh it with `clerk update`, or invoke the latest through a package runner such as `bunx clerk@latest`. The binary is always the source of truth, so run `clerk <command> --help` to verify anything this skill claims.

## Execution environment (prefer the host, understand the sandbox warning)

Most AI coding agents default to running shell commands in a sandbox where the
user's home directory, OS keychain, browser launch, localhost callback
binding, or network access may be blocked. The Clerk CLI depends on all of
those host capabilities:

- **OS credential store**: `clerk auth login` stores the OAuth token in the
  system keychain. A sandbox without keychain access reports "not logged in"
  even when the host is authenticated.
- **Home-directory Clerk state**: saved config, cached metadata, and fallback
  credentials live under the user's Clerk config/data directories.
- **Linked project metadata**: resolved from the repo's git remote plus Clerk
  config. Sandboxes with stripped repo state or blocked home-dir reads can
  misreport "not linked".
- **Local `.env*` files**: publishable and secret keys materialized by
  `clerk env pull`.
- **Outbound network access to Clerk**: every Backend and Platform API call.
- **Browser + localhost OAuth callback**: `clerk auth login` needs both.

In agent mode, the CLI now does a **best-effort warn-once check** at the
