## What it does

The skill provides architecture rules and implementation patterns for Clerk auth in Chrome extensions. It covers why OAuth providers like Google or GitHub cannot run directly inside popups or side panels. For social logins and SAML, the skill guides you through `syncHost` delegation, reading session cookies from your web domain via `host_permissions` and registering the extension origin via Clerk API.

Service workers and content scripts cannot access Clerk React hooks. The skill sets up `createClerkClient` from `@clerk/chrome-extension/client` instead. You must pass `background: true` in the worker, or session tokens will expire after 60 seconds.

Bot protection must be turned off in the Clerk Dashboard because Cloudflare bot checks fail in extension environments. In addition, you must enable the Native API setting and define a fixed `key` in `manifest.json` before deployment, or every rebuild changes the extension ID and breaks sessions.

## Requirements
- Works with: Chrome

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add clerk/skills --skill clerk-chrome-extension-patterns -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/clerk-chrome-extension-patterns/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/clerk-chrome-extension-patterns/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add clerk/skills --skill clerk-chrome-extension-patterns -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/clerk-chrome-extension-patterns/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add clerk/skills --skill clerk-chrome-extension-patterns -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/clerk-chrome-extension-patterns/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install clerk/skills clerk-chrome-extension-patterns
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/clerk-chrome-extension-patterns/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add clerk/skills --skill clerk-chrome-extension-patterns -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/clerk/skills --path skills/clerk-chrome-extension-patterns
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/clerk-chrome-extension-patterns/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add clerk/skills --skill clerk-chrome-extension-patterns -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/clerk/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/clerk-chrome-extension-patterns/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- route OAuth and SAML authentication through a web app with syncHost
- retrieve session tokens in background service workers without React hooks
- sync user login state between an existing web app and an extension
- preserve extension authentication across rebuilds with a fixed CRX key

## Example prompts
- Show me how to set up ClerkProvider with syncHost in a Plasmo extension
- How do I get a Clerk token in a background service worker using createClerkClient?
- Why does Google OAuth fail inside an extension popup and how do I fix it?

# Chrome Extension Patterns

## CRITICAL RULES

1. OAuth (Google, GitHub, etc.) and SAML are NOT supported in popups or side panels -- use `syncHost` to delegate auth to your web app
2. Email links (magic links) don't work in popups -- the popup closes when the user clicks outside, resetting sign-in state
3. Side panels don't auto-refresh auth state -- users must close and reopen the side panel after signing in via the web app
4. Service workers and content scripts have NO access to Clerk React hooks -- use `createClerkClient()` or message passing
5. Extension URLs use `chrome-extension://` not `http://` -- all redirect URLs must use `chrome.runtime.getURL('.')`
6. Without a stable CRX ID, every rebuild breaks auth -- configure `key` in manifest BEFORE deploying
7. Content scripts cannot use Clerk directly due to origin restrictions -- Clerk enforces strict allowed origins
8. Bot protection must be DISABLED in Clerk Dashboard -- Cloudflare bot detection is not supported in extension environments

## Authentication Options

| Method | Popup | Side Panel | syncHost (with web app) |
|--------|-------|------------|------------------------|
| Email + OTP | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Email + Link | No | No | Yes |
| Email + Password | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Username + Password | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| SMS + OTP | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| OAuth (Google, GitHub, etc.) | **NO** | **NO** | **YES** |
| SAML | **NO** | **NO** | **YES** |
| Passkeys | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Google One Tap | No | No | Yes |
| Web3 | No | No | Yes |

## Quick Start (Plasmo)

```bash
npx create-plasmo --with-tailwindcss --with-src my-extension
cd my-extension
npm install @clerk/chrome-extension
```
