# clerk-authentication

Rules for wiring Clerk into Next.js: middleware, hooks, protected server actions and API routes. Useful once your app already runs on Clerk.

## What it does

The skill gives your agent a fixed approach to Clerk in Next.js. Authentication gets checked at every data access point, not just in middleware, and each server action is protected on its own. Clerk's built-in pieces — HttpOnly cookies and CSRF protection — are the baseline.

What's inside: `ClerkProvider` in `app/layout.tsx`, including a custom theme via `@clerk/themes`; `clerkMiddleware` with `createRouteMatcher` for protected and public routes; role checks through `sessionClaims?.metadata?.role`. Server components use `auth()` and `currentUser()`, client components use `useUser` and `useAuth`, and `getToken()` supplies a fresh token for the `Authorization` header on API calls.

You need `@clerk/nextjs` installed and both `NEXT_PUBLIC_CLERK_PUBLISHABLE_KEY` and `CLERK_SECRET_KEY` set. Middleware with `auth.protect()` won't cover a server action that lacks its own `userId` check — that gap is easy to leave open, which is why the skill pushes defense-in-depth.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill clerk-authentication -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/clerk-authentication/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/clerk-authentication/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill clerk-authentication -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/clerk-authentication/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill clerk-authentication -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/clerk-authentication/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Mindrally/skills clerk-authentication
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/clerk-authentication/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill clerk-authentication -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Mindrally/skills --path clerk-authentication
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/clerk-authentication/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill clerk-authentication -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Mindrally/skills/tree/HEAD/clerk-authentication/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- lock the dashboard and admin area to signed-in users
- check a user's role before serving an admin route
- stop a server action from running without a session
- fetch a fresh token for a protected API call
- set redirect targets after sign-in and sign-up

## Example prompts
- Add Clerk to this Next.js app following the clerk-authentication skill: provider in layout, middleware with protected routes
- Audit every server action for auth() checks using the clerk-authentication skill
- Set up role-based access for /admin per the clerk-authentication skill

# Clerk Authentication

You are an expert in Clerk authentication implementation for Next.js applications. Follow these guidelines when integrating Clerk.

## Core Principles

- Implement defense-in-depth with multiple authentication layers
- Verify authentication at every data access point, not just middleware
- Protect server actions individually
- Use Clerk's built-in security features (HttpOnly cookies, CSRF protection)

## Installation and Setup

```bash
npm install @clerk/nextjs
```

### Environment Variables

```bash
# Required
NEXT_PUBLIC_CLERK_PUBLISHABLE_KEY=pk_...
CLERK_SECRET_KEY=sk_...
# Optional: Custom URLs
NEXT_PUBLIC_CLERK_SIGN_IN_URL=/sign-in
NEXT_PUBLIC_CLERK_SIGN_UP_URL=/sign-up
NEXT_PUBLIC_CLERK_AFTER_SIGN_IN_URL=/dashboard
NEXT_PUBLIC_CLERK_AFTER_SIGN_UP_URL=/dashboard
```

## Provider Setup

### App Router (app/layout.tsx)

```typescript
import { ClerkProvider } from '@clerk/nextjs';
export default function RootLayout({
  children,
}: {
  children: React.ReactNode;
}) {
  return (
    <ClerkProvider>
      <html lang="en">
        <body>{children}</body>
      </html>
    </ClerkProvider>
  );
}
```

### With Custom Appearance

```typescript
import { ClerkProvider } from '@clerk/nextjs';
import { dark } from '@clerk/themes';
export default function RootLayout({ children }: { children: React.ReactNode }) {
  return (
    <ClerkProvider
      appearance={{
        baseTheme: dark,
        variables: {
          colorPrimary: '#3b82f6',
        },
        elements: {
          formButtonPrimary: 'bg-blue-500 hover:bg-blue-600',
        },
      }}
    >
      <html lang="en">
        <body>{children}</body>
      </html>
    </ClerkProvider>
  );
}
```

## Middleware Configuration

### Basic Middleware (middleware.ts)

```typescript
import { clerkMiddleware, createRouteMatcher } from '@clerk/nextjs/server';
// Define protected routes
const isProtectedRoute = createRouteMatcher([
  '/dashboard(.*)',
  '/api/protected(.*)',
  '/settings(.*)',
]);
// Define public routes (optional, for clarity)
const isPublicRoute = createRouteMatcher([
  '/',
  '/sign-in(.*)',
  '/sign-up(.*)',
  '/api/public(.*)',
]);
export default clerkMiddleware(async (auth, req) => {
  if (isProtectedRoute(req)) {
    await auth.protect();
  }
});
export const config = {
  matcher: [
    // Skip Next.js internals and static files
