## What it does

The skill activates when you ask for Clerk auth on Android, Kotlin or Jetpack Compose, or when the agent spots a native Android project by `build.gradle(.kts)`, `AndroidManifest.xml` and Compose UI files. Expo and React Native projects are out of scope — those route to the general setup skill.

Two reference files ship with it: `references/prebuilt.md` for the ready-made `AuthView` and `UserButton`, and `references/custom.md` for an API-driven flow. Before touching any file, the agent asks which flow you want and needs a real Clerk publishable key. Miss either one and it pauses instead of editing. Blending the two references in one implementation is off the table unless you ask for a hybrid.

No code samples are baked in. The agent reads the current `clerk-android` sources and docs for the SDK version you have installed. Prebuilt work pulls in `clerk-android-ui`; custom work pulls in `clerk-android-api`. You need Android Studio and the `clerk-android` Gradle dependency in place, plus the Native API enabled for your Clerk app. Screen behaviour is gated on the instance's runtime settings, so the agent won't hardcode a factor list that drifts from your dashboard config.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add clerk/skills --skill clerk-android -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/clerk-android/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/clerk-android/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add clerk/skills --skill clerk-android -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/clerk-android/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add clerk/skills --skill clerk-android -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/clerk-android/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install clerk/skills clerk-android
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/clerk-android/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add clerk/skills --skill clerk-android -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/clerk/skills --path skills/clerk-android
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/clerk-android/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add clerk/skills --skill clerk-android -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/clerk/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/clerk-android/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- add Clerk auth to a native Android app written in Kotlin
- pick between prebuilt AuthView/UserButton and a custom auth flow
- build a multi-step sign-in with per-factor handling
- check the project against the Android quickstart prerequisites
- gate auth screens on the Clerk instance's runtime settings

## Example prompts
- Add Clerk auth to this Jetpack Compose Android app, I want the prebuilt AuthView and UserButton
- I need a custom Clerk API auth flow in this Kotlin project
- Check whether this project meets the Android quickstart requirements for Clerk

# Clerk Android (Native)

This skill implements Clerk in native Android projects by following current `clerk-android` SDK and docs patterns.

## Activation Rules

Activate this skill when either condition is true:
- The user explicitly asks for Android, Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, or native mobile Clerk implementation on Android.
- The project appears to be native Android (for example `build.gradle(.kts)` with Android plugins, `AndroidManifest.xml`, `app/src/main/java`, Compose UI files).

Do not activate this skill when either condition is true:
- The project is Expo.
- The project is React Native.

If Expo/React Native signals are present, route to the general setup skill instead.

## What Do You Need?

| Task | Reference |
|------|-----------|
| Prebuilt AuthView / UserButton (fastest) | references/prebuilt.md |
| Custom API-driven auth flows (full control) | references/custom.md |

## Quick Start

| Step | Action |
|------|--------|
| 1 | Confirm project type is native Android and not Expo/React Native |
| 2 | Determine flow type (`prebuilt` or `custom`) and load the matching reference file |
| 3 | Ensure a real Clerk publishable key exists (or ask developer) |
| 4 | Ensure correct Clerk artifacts are installed for the selected flow |
| 5 | Read official Android quickstart and verify required setup (Native API, min SDK/Java, manifest, initialization) |
| 6 | Inspect `clerk-android` source/sample patterns relevant to selected flow |
| 7 | Implement flow by following only the selected reference checklist |

## Decision Tree

```text
User asks for Clerk in Android/Kotlin
    |
    +-- Expo/React Native project detected?
    |     |
    |     +-- YES -> Do not use this skill
    |     |
    |     +-- NO -> Continue
    |
    +-- Existing auth UI detected?
    |     |
    |     +-- Prebuilt views detected -> Load references/prebuilt.md
    |     |
    |     +-- Custom flow detected -> Load references/custom.md
    |     |
    |     +-- New implementation -> Ask developer prebuilt/custom, then load matching reference
    |
    +-- Ensure publishable key and SDK initialization path
